"The vision for the Lower St. Louis River is a thriving human community connected to the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of the river. The river ecosystems are diverse, productive, and healthy, with natural processes operating within the natural range of variation. The diversity of plants and animals and the composition of natural communities present at the time of European settlement is reflected in the sustainable ecosystems of today."
The St. Louis River Habitat Workgroup (HWG) is made up of agencies, communities, and individuals who have been working on implementing this vision since the creation of the 2002 Lower St. Louis River Habitat Plan.
The HWG meets quarterly to discuss current habitat projects, emerging conservation issues, and funding opportunities for future work in the St Louis River Estuary. Would you like to join us?

Published in 2002, the Lower St. Louis River Habitat Plan was created by the Habitat Committee of the St. Louis River Citizens Action Committee (now known as the St. Louis River Alliance).
The Plan was created as the collective vision and guiding tool for "estuary-wide resource management and conservation actions." This Plan is a living document that has been institutionalized in other processes, including Area of Concern Remedial Action Plans and the Lake Superior Headwaters Sustainability Partnership. The HWG is currently working to fully update the Habitat Plan.
This website helps agencies, communities, and individuals collaborate and track progress toward the conservation goals outlined in the Plan. It helps workgroup members stay informed of current developments in the revitalization of our communities through habitat protection and restoration.
The HWG tracks the progress made towards the priority projects defined in the Habitat Plan. We have recently moved to a digital database, allowing us to visualize and share our collective progress.
Click on the map to interact with the HWG project tracking dashboard and learn more about habitat projects in the St. Louis River Estuary.
Have a habitat project that you would like to see added to the database? Projects are updated annually. Contact hannah.ramage@wisc.edu
