This spring semester, a group of students traveled to St. Louis, MO, to spend five days participating in service-learning. The work they did surrounded the topic of Education Equity through a social justice lens. The community partners paired with a focus on a variety of topics. Kingdom House focuses on helping the economically disadvantaged achieve economic independence, self-sufficiency, and a path out of poverty. Ready Readers focuses on increasing the literacy rate of pre-school aged children from low-income communities. They have partnered with Sumner High School and KIPP Inspire to learn how these institutions are ensuring/progressing towards educational equity. The group has also collaborated with the Gephardt Institution at Washington University at St. Louis and St. Louis Public School board members to engage in conversations on the matter through a policy lens. When the students aren’t volunteering, they will be exploring various cultural outings in the area of downtown St. Louis. This includes The Gateway Arch, St. Louis Botanical Gardens, the City Museum, St. Louis Art Museum, the Delmar Loop, and a local farmer's market.
