August Walk

On Friday 7th August 2026 12 of us set off from St Joseph’s for Spud Wood, near Lymm. Spud wood is named after the potato fields that used to grow there before it was taken over by the Woodland Trust. From the car park, a short walk along the Bridgewater Canal led to a very steep short path down to the road under the canal from where we entered Spud Wood itself. A full circuit of the wood was enjoyed on a warm sunny evening with open spaces and woodland areas, the total distance being about two miles. A highlight towards the end was the sighting of hares in the undergrowth. Most of us then proceeded to the nearby Green Dragon for refreshment and chat in a comfy seating area outside the pub.

July Walk

Two attendees plus me as leader (not surprising with Wimbledon Men's Final clash). 4.3 miles round Stamford Park lakes and the park itself, (an ice-cream was enjoyed by the 3 of us) followed by a walk through Stalybridge centre onto Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Very conscious of the air pollution from the Dovestone fire. 

It will be repeated in March 2027 so more walkers can enjoy it.

Marple walk report

8th March 2026

Number of walkers: 11 + dog

New walkers: 3

Walk length: 4.5 miles

It was an easy walk. But some walkers found the stiles, the stepped parts of the route and uneven paths challenging. Parts of the route were also boggy.

Many also walked at a slow pace and we returned to St Joseph's a little later than planned.

Overall everyone enjoyed the walk.
