The Poison Control Centre, Christian Medical College Vellore, launched STING – the Annual Postgraduate Quiz on Clinical Toxinology, in 2022. The quiz was conceived with a simple goal: to introduce medical postgraduates to the fascinating and clinically important field of Clinical Toxinology, while equipping them with the fundamental principles required to recognise and manage snakebite envenoming, other venomous bites and stings, and plant poisoning. STING also seeks to sensitise young physicians to the broader public-health strategies required for snakebite prevention and mitigation.
For its first four editions, STING was conducted in association with International Snakebite Awareness Day, bringing together postgraduate trainees around the shared goal of improving awareness, knowledge, and clinical preparedness for snakebite and other toxinological emergencies.
In 2026, as STING enters its fifth edition, we are taking the quiz to a wider audience by conducting it in association with the Medicine Annual Conference(MAC) 2026. However, STING 2026 is open to any eligible candidate to participate; registration for MAC 2026 is not mandatory
The need for greater awareness and education remains urgent. India bears the largest burden of snakebite mortality globally, with more than 50,000 deaths estimated each year - approximately one death every 10 minutes. The burden falls disproportionately on rural and economically disadvantaged communities. Yet many of these deaths are preventable.
Reducing snakebite deaths will require a combined effort: better prevention, timely access to appropriate care, improved treatments, and, above all, effective education of communities and healthcare professionals.
It is in this spirit that the Poison Control Centre, Christian Medical College Vellore, presents the 5th edition of STING - bringing together learning, competition, and a shared commitment to improving the care of patients affected by poisoning and envenoming.
