To serve as president, one must: be a natural-born U.S. citizen of the United States; be at least 35 years old; be a resident in the United States for at least 14 years.
The controversy generated by various conspiracy theorists who asserted during the 2008 presidential election campaign that Barack Obama was not a natural-born U.S. citizen, as mandated by the Constitution, and thus was ineligible to be President of the United States, prompted several state legislatures to consider legislation aimed at requiring future presidential candidates to show proof of presidential eligibility before being granted ballot access in their state. Also, activists subscribing to these "birther theories" lobbied members of Congress to block Obama from taking office after he won the election, but to no avail.
President Barack Obama released the long-form version of his birth certificate, yet another piece of concrete evidence that shows he was born in the United States.
There’s one name missing from the long lists of runners and riders on the Democratic side: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The new campaign has emphasized Ocasio-Cortez’s work for the district over her work to change the party.
There are a number of reasons for this, perhaps the most obvious being that Ocasio-Cortez is 29 years old. That means the new member of the House from New York’s 14th Congressional District is constitutionally barred from running for the office of president until 2024. Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution says:
No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.
“Ocasio-Cortez 2020 has created a grass roots machine, mobilizing over 2,600 unique volunteers during the covid-19 crisis to make over 250,000 community check-in calls, over 70,000 texts, distribute over 32,800 masks and deliver over 3,000 meals,” said the campaign’s current press secretary, Ivet Contreras.
WHY: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Can’t Run for President in 2020. Trump Should Be Relieved.
Ocasio-Cortez faces three Democrats in the primary, including a well-funded challenge from former CNBC host Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, who accuses the freshman congresswoman of being distracted by celebrity and national politics.
Ocasio-Cortez said in the debate. “Some Democrats believe in not protecting immigrant rights. Other Democrats believe that we should subsidize big pharma and health-care corporations. I’ll be very honest about that. But we come together, too.”

“The @AOC account is important to you as a legislator, to your constituents, and to others who seek to understand and influence your legislative decisions and priorities.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended her right to block Twitter users who harass her after Columbia University’s Knight First Amendment Institute sent her a letter deeming the action unconstitutional.
Harassment is not a viewpoint. Some accounts, like the Daily Caller, posted fake nude photos of me & abused my comments to spread it. No one is entitled to abuse.
Ocasio-Cortez said on Thursday that she blocked fewer than 20 accounts out of her 5.2 million followers and only for “ongoing harassment.”
