StepSnap — Privacy Policy

SHORT VERSION
StepSnap does not collect, transmit, sell or share any of your data. Everything it creates stays inside your own browser. There is no account, no server and no analytics.
WHAT STEPSNAP STORES, AND WHERE
While you have explicitly started a recording, StepSnap captures:
• a screenshot of the visible area of the tab for each step
• the text of the element you acted on (for example a button label or a field name)
• the value you typed into ordinary text fields
• the URL and title of the page each step happened on
Just before each screenshot, if auto-blur is on (the default), StepSnap looks at the visible page for password fields, filled-in email / phone / card fields, and email addresses, card numbers and phone numbers written on the page. Only the position of those areas is kept, so they can be blurred in the screenshot; the values themselves are not stored.
If page-change, hover or scroll recording is on, StepSnap also notes the title and address of pages you open during the recording, when a menu opens under your mouse, and long scrolls – each as a step with a screenshot, like a click.
If you record a voice note for a step, StepSnap uses your microphone only while you are recording that note, and stores the recording next to the guide. Chrome asks for your permission the first time.
All of it is written to IndexedDB inside your own browser, on your own device. The recording state (active/paused, step count) and your settings (language, auto-blur, brand colour, logo and footer text) are kept in chrome.storage.local, also on your device.
StepSnap has no backend. None of the above is ever uploaded, and the developer cannot see it.
OPTIONAL FEATURES THAT TOUCH YOUR FILES OR ON-DEVICE AI
• Sync folder. If you choose a sync folder in Settings, StepSnap writes your guides (with their screenshots and voice notes) as .stepsnap files into that folder and reads them back from it. Chrome asks you to allow access to the folder. If the folder is inside a cloud drive (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox…), that app uploads the files under its own terms; StepSnap itself uploads nothing.
• On-device AI. Translate, suggest title and improve step text use the AI built into Chrome (Translator, Summarizer and Prompt API). The model runs on your computer; the guide text and, for improving steps, a screenshot are processed locally and are not sent to StepSnap or any server by StepSnap. Chrome downloads the model the first time you use one of these features.
WHAT STEPSNAP DELIBERATELY DOES NOT RECORD
Values typed into password fields are never stored as step text, and neither are values typed into fields whose name, id or autocomplete hint looks like a card number, CVV, OTP, one-time code, SSN, secret or token. Content inside iframes (for example an embedded payment form) is not recorded at all — only the top-level page is.
WHEN YOU ARE NOT RECORDING
The content script is inert. It does not read page content, watch your clicks, or track which sites you visit.
YOUR CONTROL OVER THE DATA
• Deleting a guide in the StepSnap library deletes its steps and screenshots.
• Uninstalling the extension removes everything StepSnap has stored.
• Exported files (PDF, Word, HTML, Markdown, MP4, WebM, GIF and .stepsnap backups) are written to your computer by your browser's normal download flow. Once exported, where they go is up to you.
• Share only passes a file to your operating system's share menu (or downloads it). StepSnap does not upload it anywhere; the app you choose to share with does.
• Backups (.stepsnap files) contain the guides, screenshots and voice notes you chose to back up. Keep them as private as the guides themselves.
PERMISSIONS
activeTab — Screenshot the visible tab and read its title and URL, after you start a recording.
scripting — Inject the recorder into tabs that were already open before StepSnap was installed.
storage — Remember whether a recording is active or paused, and your settings.
unlimitedStorage — Keep long guides from being evicted, because screenshots and voice notes are large.
Host permission (all URLs) — The workflow you want to document can be on any site; the recorder stays inactive until you start it.
THIRD PARTIES
There are none. StepSnap loads no remote code, no fonts, no trackers and no analytics.
CHANGES
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be published at this same address with a new date at the top.
