We would love for you to join us this year in showing off the great discoveries you have made, be they craft or science. You may choose to compete or display! We would also love it if could teach a class for us to help others learn new things! All registrations require the same form.
This is a “body of work” competition open to any level artisan. Prizes awarded for Baronial Champion, Novice and Youth (10yrs-16yrs)
Deadline to register is July 1, 2018.
Interested in entering our Artisan competition? Here is some basic information.
Artisans should include in their displays evidence of growth as an artisan and researcher. Content as well as appearance of your display will be taken into consideration. Be prepared to talk with Their Excellencies and the judges throughout the day. For our Artisan competition, body of work can be as few as 3-5 pieces and the research placed on display for the judges.
Historical crafts of all kinds are entered. Some examples are needlework, jewelry, ironwork, beadery, hand-crafted garb, millinery, weaving, ceramics, really any sort of period craft. It can also be a collection of research done in the sciences in the form of research papers or redacted equipment and experiements. Such examples include period medicine, optical theory, dance, animal husbandry and more. Not all of your work has to come from the same media or skill set to be included in the body of work.
**Site is Dry to non-competitors**
We would love for our judges and members of the populace to share in your work. Only those who will be competing in the artisan competition will be allowed to bring alcohol on site. Please arrange for plastic 1oz sample cups for use by those of legal age to sample your artistic work. Give notice of alcoholic entries at registration.
This is open to all gentles who do not hold a Kingdom or Baronial level A&S award, nor have they won a major championship. (If you are unsure of your eligibility, please contact the Autocrat.) Lengthy documentation is encouraged but not required.
To enter, click on the Registration link and then all you have to do is show up with your piece or pieces, appropriate displays, and your research.
Submit research papers to: steppes.artisan@gmail.com
Tables will be provided, but it's suggested you bring some appropriate supports to showcase your work. A stand or even a simple fabric drape can help your work stand out. You should also make a small placard with the title or description of the piece as well as your name - it's hard for the judges to judge if they don't know what it is and to whom it belongs!
For most entries, a single page explaining the origins of your design and listing some historical examples and cultural origins will help the judges determine how faithful your work is to extant examples as well as placing your work in its proper historical and artistic context! Artisans should have some pieces that have thorough research to accompany them.
Novice and children's competitions, minimal research is required to be displayed, but be prepared to hold a goodly conversation about the topic and the research you have found thus far with our judges. This conversation is a great way to learn more about the topic and provide guidance for future endevours!
