Wilmington, North Carolina — May 10th , 2026 — Following a long career in North Carolina’s electrical utilities sector, retired engineer Stephen Bojekian continues to stay involved in the Wilmington community through volunteer work, mentorship, and educational programs focused on electronics and technical learning.
Bojekian, 68, spent nearly 40 years working in the regional power industry, helping support and maintain electrical systems that served homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses throughout North Carolina. During his career, he earned a reputation among coworkers for being dependable, knowledgeable, and committed to solving problems efficiently and safely.
“Stephen was the kind of person people relied on,” said a former colleague. “He stayed professional under pressure and always approached his work with consistency and attention to detail.”
Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Bojekian dedicated most of his professional life to engineering and infrastructure support. After retiring, he and his wife Susan relocated to Wilmington to enjoy a quieter lifestyle while remaining active in local community activities.
Despite stepping away from full-time employment, Bojekian says he still wanted to use his experience and skills in meaningful ways.
“I’ve always liked staying productive,” Bojekian said. “I enjoy building things, learning new skills, and helping people whenever I can.”
Today, Bojekian volunteers at a local community center where he teaches students the basics of electronics, electrical safety, and troubleshooting. Through hands-on projects and demonstrations, he helps younger students better understand practical engineering concepts while encouraging curiosity and problem-solving.
Community organizers say his experience and approachable personality have made him an important part of the program.
“Stephen has a very practical way of teaching,” said one local coordinator. “He makes technical subjects easier to understand and gives students confidence to ask questions and learn.”
Outside of volunteer work, Bojekian enjoys woodworking, amateur radio operation, and home improvement projects. Friends and neighbors say he is always willing to assist others with repairs, technical issues, or advice when needed.
“He’s always willing to help,” said one Wilmington neighbor. “Whether it’s fixing something around the house or explaining how something works, Stephen genuinely enjoys sharing his knowledge.”
Family continues to play a major role in Bojekian’s life. He and Susan recently celebrated 42 years of marriage and regularly spend time with their two adult children and three grandchildren.
Over the past several years, Bojekian has also focused more attention on maintaining his health and staying physically active. After experiencing a minor heart-related health issue several years ago, he adopted healthier daily habits that include regular walks, improved nutrition, and a more active routine.
Local community leaders say retirees like Bojekian continue to provide valuable mentorship and leadership by sharing decades of professional experience with younger generations.
“People who remain involved after retirement can have a huge impact on their communities,” said one volunteer organizer. “Stephen is a great example of someone continuing to make a difference through service and mentorship.”
For Bojekian, retirement has simply become another chapter focused on learning, contributing, and staying connected with others.
“You may retire from a career,” he said, “but you never stop finding ways to be useful and involved.”
