Stephen Gleave has more than three decades of experience as a lawyer. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of Ontario. For much of his career, he worked for the Toronto firm Hicks Morley and then in 2019 he moved to DLA Piper (Canada) LLP, where he is a partner. Gleave is a recognized expert in Canadian Labour and Employment law.

During his career, Gleave has completed more than 50 trials, 300 labour and commercial arbitrations and 50 labour and civil injunctions. In those cases, he represented employers in wrongful competition matters, like restrictive covenants and breaches of confidence and wrongful dismissal actions.

Gleave, who was educated Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario and the University of Oxford in England, also is knowledgeable in the forensic inspection of media devices, including the collection and preservation of their digital contents. He teaches seminars on the topic to other attorneys.

In his personal life, Gleave is a nature lover. He lives on a 100-acre farm in Ancaster, a historic town in the city of Hamilton, Ontario. There, he raises Scottish Highland cattle and bees, and tends to the old Carolinian forests on the grounds. He is especially interested in trees. On his property, he’s currently growing new forests composed of Tulip trees, Kentucky coffee trees and other antique trees. He also maintains on the grounds a large orchard made up of plum, apple, pear and cherry trees.

Stephen Gleave is a foodie. He loves exposing his legal clients, friends and family to new and interesting restaurants in the greater Toronto metropolitan area.

Gleave is an avid fly fisherman. He particularly likes fishing on the Saugeen River in Bruce County in southern Ontario. He likes to catch bass, trout and muskie. He also is a competitive runner. He runs as many as 30 or even 40 miles every week.
