Who I Am and What I Do
Who I Am and What I Do
My name is Niki and I started Step by Step Conductive Education in 2022.
I am a Conductive Education Practitioner with extensive experience working with children and adults with a variety of conditions overseas and in Aotearoa New Zealand. I received my degree in Conductive Education and primary school teaching in Budapest, Hungary, and I have worked in a range of settings in a number of different countries for the past 13 years. I am currently offering therapy services privately in Hamilton. I provide an individualised habilitation and rehabilitation programme for infants and children with mainly physical delays and disorders.
Conductive Education is play-based therapy used to develop skills in children with developmental delays; it is designed to be stimulating to promote active learning and skill building during structured and motivating activities. Conductive Education supports children to achieve and retain their maximum potential towards independence in all aspects of their life. They are taught to see themselves as active participants in the world and as a result they may become more self-reliant and motivated to be as independent as possible.
Conductive Education has proven to be beneficial for children who have cerebral palsy or other brain based motor disorders and disabilities. It has also benefitted children with spina bifida, varying syndromes, genetic conditions, and traumatic brain injuries. Conductive Education is a holistic approach and is based on the theory of neuroplasticity - the brain’s ability to form new connections and pathways as a result of experience. We can do this through practice and repetition during planned and structured activities. Motivation is an essential part of CE so that your child can learn and develop new skills while playing. Purposeful play is essential to brain development.
One of the more powerful outcomes from the Conductive Education process beyond the quality of life improvement is the strengthening of the family unit. I work closely with the families to make sure that you can be empowered with the tools necessary to help your child through their developmental challenges.
