If you try to make antimalware service executable consume less CPU with the 2 methods explained in this article and there seems to be no progress, you should try to disable your Windows Security program permanently.

That said, many people already have a third-party antivirus running on top of Windows Defender. Before deciding whether to disable it, IT consulting services may help determine if your third-party antivirus is performing at better efficiency than Windows Defender.

We can now disable the Real-time protection which should be enough for most testing purposes. When you turn it off you will get a warning, just click yes to disable the Windows Defender.

An alternative way to disable Windows Defender in Windows 10 or 11 is to use the registry. For this, you will also need to boot into safe mode. Follow step 1 from the previous chapter to boot into safe mode.

If you no longer want to disable Windows Defender you can easily revert the change. You will need to restart into safe mode again and give System and TrustedInstaller full access permission on the Platform folder.

Thank you so much for this. I used the registry example from above and it perfectly disabled Windows Defender under the latest build of Windows 11. I have been trying for hours to find a way to do this and your article did the trick. ?

On Windows 10, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the anti-malware solution that protects your computer and files from unwanted viruses, ransomware, spyware, and other malware and hackers. While it is considered one of the best computer antivirus software options, you may still find situations where you may want to disable it permanently.

Although Windows 10 does not include an option to uninstall Microsoft Defender Antivirus, it is possible to permanently disable the app using Group Policy or install a third-party solution. Or you can also disable the antivirus temporarily using the Windows Security app.

After restarting the computer, the antivirus will enable again automatically. Or you can use the same instructions outlined above, but in step 5, make sure to turn on the Real-time protection toggle switch.

If you want to disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus permanently, you can use the Group Policy Editor. The only caveat is that you must also disable the "Tamper Protection" feature before the policy can apply.

Once you complete the steps, the Windows antivirus will be disabled permanently, but the "shield" icon will remain in the Taskbar because the icon is part of the Windows Security app, not the antivirus program.

You can always undo the changes using the same instructions, but in step 5, select the Not Configured option. In addition to enabling the antivirus, it is also a good idea to turn on the "Tamper Protection" feature again using the same steps outlined above, but in step 5, make sure to enable the toggle switch.

If you plan to disable the antivirus to install another anti-malware software, this process isn't necessary since installing another security software will disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus automatically.

Although multiple methods exist to disable the default antivirus on Windows 10, we do not recommend using a computer without anti-malware protection. However, some situations might still be where disabling the security feature could make sense.

Microsoft has revoked the API for Windows Server that allowed us to report the presence of our Antivirus, which would cause Windows to automatically disable Windows Defender. Therefore, we cannot turn off Defender during installation, and it will need to be disabled either manually on the device or via Group Policy Object.

Windows Defender will automatically disable and not run if periodic scanning is turned off (which is the default when you install a third-party security product). However, when turning on periodic scanning, Windows Defender will run simultaneously with the third-party security product.

In the previous step, you already did download and extract Autoruns for Windows. Browse to the Autoruns folder and start the executable Autoruns64.exe. If you are running Windows 10 32-bit, start Autoruns.exe.

In this article, you learned how to turn off Windows Defender in Windows 10 permanently. Make sure to follow the exact steps, as shown in the article. After doing that, Windows Defender will be kept turned off.

So I disabled windows update and BITs services every time I logon windows. It had been working fine for a long while, today the issue came back on, and worst it had no signal on the external monitor. Now using your solution to turn off windows defender seems bring my monitor back on, best no flickering. I hope permanently.

As a workaround, you can run the following command to put Defender to a platform version, then you can disable services and change registry

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Defender\MpCmdRun.exe -resetplatform

You can only disable the defender service if you first disable defender. If not, its impossible to change the start-up of the service as the key is protected whilst the service is running. In 20h2, it seems you also have to first disable defender (either with the registery, gpedit or by usibg a third party AV), AND disable the security services as well! Then after a restart you can disable the Defender Antivirus Service itself and the others eg Defender Network Inspection Service.

There is one final step which worked

one of these extra steps helped

this is for ver 20h2, other ver may vary

I disabled WD in group policy

in registry under WD 2 keys need to be set to 1

disableantivirus disableantispyware to 1 using ExecTI

your steps kill WD but still some remnants keep running

Finally confirm with app like speccy to see WD disabled

VER 20H2 questionable, speccy app says win def enabled still

I followed all the steps, unchecked in autorun

All of you should verify in speccy or any other similar app

Author please verify and update any solutions

Have installed BitDefender on windows 10 64-bit pro PC. Been having crashing issue with MsSense.exe crashing and MS Windows Defender for a long time before installng BitDefender today. Was never able to turn off Windows Defender and still can't. Decided to install a 3rd party A/V (BitDefender) which I thought would disable the Win 10 Defender built in A/B. But I still have the original Windows Defender running after installing BitDefender. The windows Defender program and all it's services are still running and crashing. All attempts to uninstall, stop, or disable the Windows "Defender" A/V do not work. The error is involving the MsSense.exe which shows it crashing and starting and stopping ALL DAY long every five mnutes. I was really hoping that switching over to a 3rd party A/V would stop this problem (just installed BitDefender) but my system now shows TWO active antivirus programs running. Window Defender AND BitDefender.

If the high CPU usage by MsMpEng problem persists, you may need to disable the Antimalware Service Executable in Windows 10. Note that disabling the Windows Defender may leave you vulnerable to many cyber-attacks if you don't have a third-party antivirus program installed.

Many people complain that Windows 10 forces them to use Windows Defender and that there is no way to disable it. Once you disable it using the Settings, the operating system re-enables it soon. Here is a solution which will allow you to disable Windows Defender in Windows 10 completely.

Update: Some users report that they can't disable Windows Defender with "NoDefender" in Windows 10 Anniversary Update. In this case, you can use Winaero Tweaker to disable Windows Defender:

You can download it here: Download Winaero Tweaker.

Let me introduce you to NoDefender - a small third party app created by my friend Lucas. He coded it to allow anyone to disable Windows Defender in Windows 10 and take back control of the operating system which Microsoft seems to constantly take away from the user.

Can someone please help. I used NoDefender to temporarily disable defender and now want to turn it back on. There is no option in the app to re-enable defender, and I tried removing the disable defender registry key, nothing works. Have not installed another anti-virus app either. Can someone help me re-enable defender?

This szenario happened very often to me because I handled AppLocker in the wrong way after my workshops. When I was done with the demo I just deleted the policies and disabled the service in one step which is the actual cause that AppLocker kind of breaks afterwars. The explanation can be found in the below TechNet article

thanks this worked but i recommend everyone perform every step. i stopped short of the final step of deleting the files in the system32 directory because it looked like windows was behaving again (the fundamental issues were fixed anyway like start menu etc) but a couple days later i tried to run a tool in my PATH in cmd and i got a group policy block alert! so i came back here and did the final step and now everything seems fine

I just tried this in order to help a neighbour to get back into his PC but learned that even that approach does not work any longer. Both sethc.exe and utilman.exe renamed. But even with the way through safe mode (or disable defender) no command prompt opens. ?

Microsoft Defender offers robust security against malware and has evolved over time. You can use it to keep your system safe from malware and do not need to spend on any third-party antivirus app. But Microsoft realizes that users can expose their system to attackers if they disable Microsoft Defender completely.

So, as a fail-safe method, Microsoft Defender turns back on after some time, even if you disable it. In the older version of Windows, disabling real-time protection was enough, but now it takes a lot more to disable Microsoft Defender. 2351a5e196
