w/o script overlooks what a Black Student Union at STEM will look like..
The presentation includes current representation at Stem, representation outside of STEM (in politics and media), future collaboration with EAST and WEST BSU's, and an overall message of how our similarities unite people who are a minority and through that will come great things.
What is Black Student Union?
The mission and philosophy of a Black Student Union is to help students strive for academic excellence, promote positive images of black people and to help students become an integral part of their college or high school community. Meanwhile it is a club that will provide a voice for black students to discuss and create a conversation of representation within their high school or college; this conversation especially applies to most schools in America as black students may be predominately outnumbered. Additionally, to promote conversations that would not have been discussed elsewhere: such as, privilege in America and to promote a community within that school to ultimately help the community beyond that school.
Why does STEM specifically need a Black Student Union?
STEM needs a black student union because there is very little representation of black students at this school. An objective for STEM BSU would be to attract more black students to be attending the high school. In this club we would discuss why there is a lack of black students and then see how us as a group can hopefully guide our school into making it a more diverse place. It is especially important because this school is growing in size, in population and square feet; so if less black students are attending, how can STEM represent Downingtown and be an inclusive environment.
Also, to learn black history! Black history will be a integral part of the club as when we are not planning one of our initiatives, a short presentation on black history will be taught and then a conversation! Part of the STEM curriculum, the history of African Americans is only slavery and oppression, as well as not at all a through topic. In BSU, stories about the Talented Tenth uplifting Black Americans will be surprising, gratifying, and hopeful.
When will the meetings be?
Black Student Union is just like any other club at STEM, C - Days during advisory. (room-TBD)
Martin Luther King Jr. is a forever-living legend, an activist during the Civil Rights Movement who protested segregation from Jim Crow Laws in the United States. On MLK day, January 21 2019, rather than stay home on our day off of school, go to Downingtown West HS from 9am to 12pm. There you will be doing acts of service as a way to give back to our community to include: painting, working with children, and community projects.
In February Black History Month has arrived, a month of respect, remembrance, and a reminder that in this country Black Americans had to fight suppression like no other minority group.
As a collective voice of STEM's Black Student Union everyday for the month of February over the announcements a quick fact will be said.
A great way to end Black History Month is with a movie to celebrate black history!
In objective: in the beginning of the school year, all Downingtown high schools will hold a book drive. A book drive for underrepresented students of color. Too many children's book depict different shades of beige for their characters, for the book drive in specific all books will be accepted, yet an emphasis on books that have main characters with brown, or black skin. Then at the end of the book drive representatives will read the collected books to the elementary school children in the most diverse schools. Also, either donate the books collected or allow for the elementary schools add to their library.
