Join us for a half-day workshop at IDC 2025 to explore how interaction design (ID), learning design (LD), and visual literacy (VL) can integrate GenAI tools and design thinking processes to improve elementary students' VL skills and raise their awareness of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This half-day workshop equips Learning Designers (LDs), Learning Experience Designers (LXDs), Educational Technology Specialists, and education practitioners with GenAI tools and design thinking strategies to plan interactive learning experiences that foster elementary students’ awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while developing their visual literacy skills. Grounded in theoretical frameworks and models (Design Thinking, Visual Literacy Theory, ADDIE, and SAMR), participants will explore innovative strategies and tools to design engaging, technology-supported learning scenarios. Activities include hands-on prototyping, visualization, collaborative ideation, and GenAI tool integration to align classroom practices with the SDGs. Participants will leave with actionable prototypes and strategies to implement in their professional practice.

We invite participants with a background in learning design and/or interaction design. Prior experience with GenAI tools is encouraged but not required. Enthusiasm for using imagery and applying design thinking to elementary education is highly valued.
Workshop Goals
By the end of the workshop, participants will: apply ID and LD, facilitated by design thinking processes and GenAI tools to craft SDG-aligned, age-appropriate learning scenarios; collaborate with peers to foster critical thinking and creativity; explore how AI-generated imagery can be used ethically and effectively in education; prototype meaningful, practical, technology-supported solutions to scaffold elementary students’ visual literacy skills, and improve their environmental and sustainability awareness.

Dr. Stefanou is a seasoned educator and researcher whose work spans multiple interdisciplinary domains. Her primary research interests include Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience (UX), Interaction Design, Learning Experience Design, and Design Thinking, with a strong focus on online and blended learning environments. Dr. Stefanou is particularly passionate about exploring the integration of AI tools in education to enhance learner engagement and accessibility. She has contributed to the academic community through numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, addressing topics such as the role of Design Thinking methodologies and principles in technology-enhanced learning, the usability of educational technologies, and the application of AI in personalized learning systems. Her research not only informs her teaching practices but also supports her mission to create innovative, learner-centered solutions that align with modern educational challenges.

Maria is the Program Coordinator of ACG’s MA in Learning Design and Technology. With over 25 years of experience in teaching and research across universities in the UK, US, and Greece, she specializes in online and blended learning, learning design, action research, and visual literacy. She has held leadership roles with AERA, AECT, and IVLA and has been Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Visual Literacy (Q1), since 2012. A Master Reviewer for Quality Matters® and an external specialist for the European Commission’s Key Action 2 initiative, her recent research focuses on the transformative impact of Generative AI on learning design, professional development, and education. Through her work, she continues to advance innovation and excellence in the field of learning design, visual literacy, and educational technology.
