Roadside Safety Tips

Roadside problems are stressful, especially at night, in bad weather, or near traffic. Steel Spur Rescue provides 24/7 roadside assistance in Casper and surrounding areas, but there are a few things you can do while waiting that may help keep you safer and make the service go smoother.

What to Tell Us When You Call

When you call for roadside assistance, please give us the most accurate location you can.

Helpful location details include:

Road name or highway number

Direction of travel

Mile marker

Exit number

Nearest intersection

Nearby business or landmark

Whether you are in a parking lot, driveway, highway shoulder, rural road, or other roadside location

Please also tell us about the vehicle and situation:

Year, make, model, and color of the vehicle

The roadside issue you are having

Whether you are pulling a trailer

Whether the vehicle is loaded heavy

Whether passengers, children, or pets are with you

Any safety concerns near the vehicle

Good information helps us find you faster, respond with the right equipment, and give you clear information before dispatch.

What to Do While You Wait

If your vehicle can be moved, get as far out of traffic as safely as you can. Turn on your hazard lights and stay aware of traffic around you.

If you are stopped on or near the roadway, the safest place is usually inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on. Stay in the vehicle unless it is not safe to do so, such as fire, smoke, crash damage, an unsafe vehicle position, or another immediate danger.

If you must exit the vehicle, use the side away from traffic when you can and move well away from the roadway. Do not stand next to traffic, between vehicles, or directly in front of or behind your vehicle.

Keep your phone nearby and watch for calls or messages. We may need more information about your location, vehicle, or the safest way to access you.

What Not to Do

Do not stand in traffic or near moving vehicles.

Do not stand between vehicles.

Do not stand directly in front of or behind your vehicle on the roadside.

Do not attempt repairs in an active traffic lane or other dangerous location.

Do not leave the area without telling us.

Do not remove tools, spare tires, or vehicle parts and place them in traffic areas.

Do not approach the service vehicle until the operator tells you it is safe.

When to Call 911 First

Call 911 first if there is a crash, injury, fire, medical emergency, immediate danger, or if your vehicle is stopped in a live traffic lane and cannot be moved.

After emergency help is requested, call Steel Spur Rescue if you still need roadside assistance.
