Battle Overview:
Students will design and build a cardboard (and duct tape) boat out of the provided materials. This boat will be required to transport two team members across the pool (or as far as possible). If a boat successfully transports its two-person-payload across, the boat will then be loaded with additional team members until failure, accumulating bonus points for each additional passenger. Bring a change of clothes!
Battle Overview:
Similar to the TV series Shark Tank, the team will make a presentation to a panel of “investors” who will decide how worthy the 3D printed product is for investment.
The team will need to identify a problem or other opportunity, design and 3D model a solution/product, and 3D print the design. The team should express the design process in their presentation and speak to the potential for their product (such as being highly lucrative, solving a humanitarian issue, etc).
Battle Overview:
In the Catapult Battle, teams will need to bring a catapult that they have designed and built from any safe materials and methods. This battle will be based on accuracy and speed, as the overall goal is to shoot the maximum number of foam practice golf balls into a 5 gallon bucket in 60 seconds. Each team will have at least 1 practice period and 3 scored attempts. The best attempt will be recorded as the team’s final score.
Battle Overview:
Students will design and build a chain reaction contraption (Rube Goldberg Machine) out of materials that are provided at the competition. This machine will be required to accomplish a simple task (details provided at the event) in as complicated a manner as possible. A minimum number of steps to accomplish the task will be provided, but students should try to include as many steps as possible while maintaining the machine’s reliability.
Battle Overview:
Students will design and build a model roller coaster out of materials that are provided at the competition. This coaster will be required to transport a marble successfully through a specified number of elements or for a specified distance. The uncertainty is intended to test students in a spontaneous and collaborative design process.

Robofest:
Wellsville will be hosting Robofest Exhibition Competition at the STEAM Wars at Franklinville. There is a $50 fee for each team and students in grades 9-12 can participate.
Teams of 2-5 students must fully program their robots to perform their missions without human assistance. No joysticks or remote controls are allowed. Any type of robot kit, materials, actuators, and sensors are allowed. Robots can be programmed with any programming language. 1 Team will progress to Worlds in May at Lawrence Tech University in Michigan.
