I'm soon going to make the switch from my current two 24" monitors to a single ultrawide. I anticipate that I'll be missing my discord screen so I was wondering if I could use the deck as a small second monitor

Simply download the Steam Link app, make sure remote play is enabled on your deck (section: remote play in the settings), and follow the instructions to set things up. At one time you need to enter a code the deck displays but once done, you should have the screen on your pc, and the controls work on the pc and the deck at the same time.

I was debating on whether get this screen or wait till deckhd released there's. There was a lil bit more work involved with deckhd as you had to modify the bios to get it to work. I was able to get this screen at a reduced price due to coupons. Installation was super easy since I didn't put the adhesive strips on when I did the front plate. Now all I need is a 2tb m.2 and my steam deck will be fully upgraded. Screen looks just as good as the stock screen. Can't wait to see what jsaux comes up with next!

With the ROG ALLY coming out soon, a lot of attention has been placed on its screen. The jump to a 1080p with better colors is a real boost for a device like this and probably one of the biggest pros I have for the ALLY, but this could change very soon! FX Technology Limited, a company that creates smartphones and accessories, has taken it upon themselves to develop a new screen for the Steam Deck which pushes the resolution possibilities to 1920x1200!

Under the name DeckHD, this screen will not only feature the higher resolution listed above, but it will also have better color accuracy for richer hues and deeper contrasts, as well as anti-glare coating. All of this while sticking to the 7 inch dimension with 400 nits of screen brightness and a 60hz refresh rate, the same as the base Steam Deck screen.

I have absolutely no issues with the stock Panel on my SD. I just got it so I have one with all of the changes that have already been made to the handheld gaming PC.Gimme a break people the SD is damn good I can play RE4 on near max settings while maintaining a solid frame rate....SD USES A CUSTOM APU,ITS MORE "DOWN TO THE TRANSISTOR"THAN THAT STUPID POS ASUS USING OFF THE SHELF APU. I HAVE TRIED 2 VERY EXPENSIVE ASUS ROG GAMING LAPTOPS AND BOTH BURNT UP WITH NO OVERCLOCKING BUT WHAT IT HAD ALREADY HAD OVERCLOCKED FROM THE FACTORY.How close to your face do you hold your SD? I have an OLED Switch and can't touch it since I got my SD, haven't touched my Xbox Series X either.I am also 37 and an IT, I can't make out a damn pixel on the screen unless I hold it so close you can't see anything else on the screen. Teraflops don't mean what they used to. It's how that computational capability is put to use that matters. The ASUS is going to have a mass effect rate I can guarantee that, have you read about ASUS mobo's and the problems they themselves are causing on AMD Ryzen CPUs on AM5? They are pushing unsafe voltages to the processor causing them to burn up not OVERCLOCKED, wow, both my ROGs were AMD that FRIED, I wonder why? The laptops would get burning hot playing a game....I will never buy another ASUS product, and like hell if I want a regular version of Windows 11 running on a handheld Gaming PC, you realize how much resources Windows 11 uses compared to the desktop mode on SD, and game mode uses even less.....and it's an extremely fast computer just to use as a computer if you familiar with Linux and the KDE Plasma desktop environment, download thunderbird for your email, keep using Firefox as your browser....Ive already ordered the dock and am going to use it as my home computer when docked hooked to monitor keyboard and mouse, I only will game in handheld in game mode. But seriously people the APU in the ASUS white handheld that has stupid glowing joysticks, that's a gimmick by the way.....just something using battery that doesn't need to. 2 smaller fans instead of one, at least mine is, very acceptable noise level fan cooling Valve's custom APU that actually says Valve powered by AMD on the APU heat spreader itself. I don't care how much more powerful the ASUS sounds on paper, it's not going to be a game changer because this APU is not SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO DO EXACTLY WHAT ASUS WANTS IT TO BECAUSE THEY HAD NO HAND IN DEVELOPING IT. And again, it's running on A REGULAR VERSION OF WINDOWS 11! I KNOW HOW CRAPPY ARMORY CRATE IS, IT HAS NO TRACK PADS, AND ITS UGLY AS SIN, AND MADE BY A CORPORATION HAVING SEVERE QUALITY CONTROL PROBLEMS AT THE MOMENT......HMMMMMMM.....

How hard is it to change the screen on SD? I once changed my Switch's R-JoyCon stick coz it was drifting so bad. Boy,was was no easy task for me. A number of parts that don't like to stay in place (those damn buttons for example), and small-ish - hard to hold with fat fingers, that's what annoyed me. Almost threw in the towel and just buy a new JoyCon replacement instead. ?

Shame they didn't use the Samsung AMS767KC04-1 or AMS767KC06 panels. They're OLED and are a bit bigger but in theory can fit in the glass frame of the deck with a bit of room to spare. They're 800p too. On top of that they're actually full RGB not Pentile, which is important for OLED. The only real downgrade is they're 200 nits (maybe can be pushed to 250/300 nits according to some camera monitors that used these panels), though the higher contrast ratio wouldn't make that so much of an problem.

Could you get the screen upgrade for it's better colors, brightness and everything else without using it's native resolution and sticking to 800p without causing performance issues or issues with display quality? Or will it look degraded because it's not the native resolution or maybe something else??

I agree. I feel on the steam deck hardware I'd rather have a 800p display with better performance than a 1200p. Even for the future I don't mind them sticking to 800p, I'd hope that they just use a more colour accurate panel.

These questions required some extra testing. I can't call this a definitive Green Eggs and Ham verdict because I haven't had a chance to play the Steam Deck on a train or boat yet, but I did spend some quality time with it outside on a very sunny day in San Jose, California. The model I have on hand is the high-end 512GB Steam Deck, which costs $649. Internally this version of the Deck is identical to the $529 Steam Deck, except its NVMe SSD has twice the storage capacity. The more significant distinguishing feature is the 512GB model's "premium anti-glare etched glass," which gives it more of a matte finish that should theoretically make the screen easier to see in direct sunlight. But I was skeptical it would really make the Steam Deck playable outside.

As with any display other than e-ink, the Steam Deck's screen loses some vibrance in bright conditions. It's not the ideal way to play, especially for a game where you're excited to really soak in the art. But it's definitely playable. The etched screen does seem to help diffuse the kind of glare that would otherwise make it almost impossible to see in direct light.

When I moved to a shady spot behind a wooden fence, the screen was even more comfortable to use, without any distracting glare at all. I have green eyes and have to squint in the face of bright sunlight even when I'm not trying to make out a screen, so playing in the shade was a relief. I still left the Steam Deck at max brightness, but regained some of the vibrancy that was blown out in direct sunlight.

To really stress the outdoor experience I played through the first few minutes of Dead Space 2, which is particularly dark. And there the Steam Deck's display struggled: it was really hard to make out what I was looking at in lit areas, and I couldn't make out what was on the screen in the dark areas at all. Even ratcheting the in-game brightness up to a washed out degree didn't really help: I could tell the contrast sucked but still had trouble seeing where to go. That's the one caveat on the Steam Deck's outdoor playability: it's good, but I think only an OLED or LCD with HDR-caliber brightness could make those kinds of black levels visible outside.

Unlike DeckHD, the team at JSAUX decided to stick with the normal 800p Steam Deck resolution. The only minor difference is that JSAUX claim their screen has 70% sRGB coverage versus 67% on the original. Could be a good little upgrade mod for anyone with a 64GB or 256GB Steam Deck to get the anti-glare screen.

Okay. I have some news.

On the weekend my deck screen started to have issues again to the point of unusable. Since I've already bought the extra display I've disasseble the deck and tested with the extra display outside the deck and it fixed. So it was the screen all along.

Since I dont have any repair or RMA option for my deck I proceeded to buy the repair tools to replace the screens. Besides the new screen I needed:

It was the first time i've replaced a glued screen in my life. I took about 3 hours in the entire process. I've followed the iFixit guide and the iFixit teardown video as my reference but I dissassembled stuff that wasn't really necessary like the trackpads and triggers because I was afraid that I would damage them with the heat of the heat gun since iFixit use a iOpener to heat the screen. The only things I didn't remove was the glued on stuff like the battery. Otherwise it was pretty much okay. I managed to remove the old screen without breaking it or anything else. I've powered on the deck with the new screen unglued to make sure everything was working, and it was and then proceeded to glue the new screen back in place.

Then added the rubber bands and now my Steam Deck is firmly waiting the glue to cure, which I will give 48 hours then I will finish the assembly and it should be done. And yeah. I'm really excited that my first screen replacement actually worked and I didn't break anything.

My total repair cost was about $110 to $120 from my rough estimate. Screen included (from aliexpress, link above). Not counting labor costs. 17dc91bb1f
