This guide details configuring qBittorrent to use CyberGhost's SOCKS5 proxy for enhanced torrenting privacy. It assumes you have a CyberGhost VPN subscription and qBittorrent installed.
Active CyberGhost VPN subscription.
qBittorrent installed and configured.
Obtain SOCKS5 Proxy Credentials:
Log into your CyberGhost account on their website.
Navigate to the VPN settings or manual configuration section.
Find the SOCKS5 proxy server address, port, username, and password. This information is typically presented as:
Host: server.socks.cyberghostvpn.com (example)
Port: 1080 (example)
Username: your_username
Password: your_password
Configure qBittorrent:
Open qBittorrent.
Go to Tools > Options.
Select the Connection tab.
Under the Proxy Server section:
Type: Choose SOCKS5.
Host: Enter the SOCKS5 proxy server address obtained from CyberGhost.
Port: Enter the SOCKS5 proxy port.
Authentication: Check the box labeled Use proxy authentication.
Username: Enter your CyberGhost SOCKS5 proxy username.
Password: Enter your CyberGhost SOCKS5 proxy password.
Check the box labeled Use proxy for peer connections.
Check the box labeled Disable connections not supported by proxies. This prevents qBittorrent from making connections outside the proxy.
Advanced Settings (Optional):
In the same Connection tab, under Listening Port:
Consider using a port within the range of 49152 to 65535. Avoid common ports.
Under Global Rate Limits:
Set reasonable upload and download limits to avoid throttling by your ISP.
Apply Changes:
Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.
Check External IP:
After configuring the proxy, restart qBittorrent.
Download a torrent that displays your IP address (e.g., search for "IP Leak Test Torrent").
Verify that the displayed IP address matches the IP address of the CyberGhost SOCKS5 proxy server, not your real IP address.
Incorrect Credentials: Double-check the username and password. Typos are common.
Firewall Interference: Ensure your firewall isn't blocking connections to the SOCKS5 proxy server.
CyberGhost Server Issues: If the proxy server is down, try a different CyberGhost server.
DNS Leaks: While SOCKS5 handles traffic, it doesn't inherently prevent DNS leaks. Consider using CyberGhost's VPN client concurrently or configuring a custom DNS server within qBittorrent's advanced settings (not covered here).
Obtained SOCKS5 proxy credentials from CyberGhost.
Configured qBittorrent with the correct proxy settings.
Enabled proxy authentication with username and password.
Disabled connections not supported by proxies.
Verified the IP address used by qBittorrent is the proxy's IP.
