David Lorenzo Sappa caught my eye a few months ago on IG. I wish we could have included his sound pieces in this show but alas, there were too many obstacles getting the work to L.A. from the UK. His artwork continues the great historical line up of sound/kinetic inventors. I thought of Jean Tinguely and some of the great avant garde musicians from the 60's and 70's such as Joe Jones. I believe what makes David's work unique is his extremely sensitive expression of the act of listening and it permeates all of his interactive work, such as "Hearing Hands".

Jesús Rafael Soto (1923-2005) was born on June 5, 1923, in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela. He studied at the Escuela de artes plásticas in Caracas from 1942 to 1947 and in 1950 at he moved to Paris. There he associated with Yaacov Agam, Jean Tinguely, and Victor Vasarely. In 1955 Soto participated in Le mouvement (The Movement) at Galerie Denise René: one of the first exhibits devoted to Kinetic Art. His work has been exhibited around the world. He used unusual materials at that time, including nylon thread, Perspex, steel with industrial paint. I first saw his work decades ago in a gallery in Beverly Hills and I was mesmerized. The subtlety of linear movement and color creates a musical feast for the eyes. Soto also constructed all-encompassing, kinetic installations applying loose threads and/or strings to turn gallery spaces into an immersive experience. These two artworks are some of his most intimate studies in light and form.
