Status and Expectations

An expectation states research program resource

We are excited to share that we are planning a conference on status and expectations states research in either 2026 or 2027. This conference celebrates the 50th anniversary of Berger, Fisek, Norman, and Zelditch's foundational book, Status Characteristics and Social Interaction: An Expectation-states Approach. We plan to release an edited volume from the presentations to showcase new developments in expectation states research. To help us in planning, we would be delighted if those interested would indicate so here.

Welcome! This website serves as a research and teaching resource for expectations states theories. We have just launched as of August 2025 and are still adding additional materials--more is on the way.

To keep up with the new additions or hear from colleagues working on expectation states puzzles, consider joining our mailing list. This is a way for status researchers to ask each other questions, share resources, and build community.
