Time-limited counselling/psychotherapy (initial session + 12 sessions with an option to renew)
Open-ended counselling/psychotherapy (initial session + no fixed number of sessions)
You may already have a sense of whether you would prefer time-limited or open-ended; you might not have any idea at all. Either way is fine; we'll discuss this together in our first session.
I currently offer on-line sessions only.
Sessions are 50 minutes long.
Counselling/psychotherapy groups (coming soon!)
grief and loss
birth trauma
Personal growth and development groups (coming soon!)
This includes 12 sessions after the initial session, with a review session half-way through, and an option to renew for another 12 sessions, once or more times.
More info:
For our review session, I'll ask you to think about our work so far, what's working for you, what's working less well for you or isn't working for you, what you'd like more of, what you'd like less of, and if what you're looking for from our work together is the same as when we started.
As we approach session 12, we'll have a conversation about whether you feel ready to end, would like to contract for another 12 sessions, or would like to change to open-ended sessions.
We do not contract for a specific number of sessions after our initial session; instead, we contract to be in the process of your counselling/therapy together, and to continue as long as we both believe it is beneficial for you.
This can still include regular reviews app. every 6-12 sessions to make sure we're both still on the same page about your counselling/therapy.
An initial session tends to be a bit more structured than "regular" sessions.
I start with some of the standard information I need to share ethically and legally, and talk a bit about how I work.
Then I ask some questions about what has brought you to counselling/psychotherapy, and we have much more of a conversation between us. We'll talk about how you understand what's brought you here, what you're looking for, my thoughts in response to that, what both of us think about how we might work together, and anything else that feels relevant.
Research has demonstrated over and over that "successful" counselling/psychotherapy depends very much on the relationship between client and counsellor/therapist.
I usually ask us both to take the time between our first and second appointments to decide if we want to work together. I will provide you with a copy of my counselling contract up-front, and if we decide to work together, we'll formally adopt that at our second session. (There is also a copy of my contract at the "Optional Paperwork" tab on this website.)
I offer this as a full-length session, because I don't think a 20-30 minute chat gives you enough of a sense of what it would be like to work with me (or me enough of a sense of what it would be like to work with you). I offer it at a discount because I know how it can feel from the client chair to interview multiple counsellors/therapists looking for a good fit, and pay for it. I also believe strongly that therapists should be paid for their time and their work, and I need to meet the costs I incur for every session.
