MetaMask Extension – Complete Browser Wallet Guide
MetaMask Extension – Complete Browser Wallet Guide
The MetaMask Extension is a browser-based cryptocurrency wallet that allows users to manage supported digital assets and interact with decentralized applications (dApps). It provides a convenient interface for connecting a wallet to Web3 websites while keeping wallet approvals under the user's control.
MetaMask is a self-custody wallet, which means protecting your Secret Recovery Phrase is one of the most important parts of setting up your wallet.
Begin at the official MetaMask website:
Check the website address carefully before downloading anything. Fake wallet websites and browser extensions can be designed to steal wallet credentials.
Select the official browser extension option and follow the installation instructions for your supported browser. When installing through a browser extension store, verify that the publisher and extension information are authentic.
After installation, open MetaMask and follow the setup instructions. You can create a new wallet or import an existing wallet using the appropriate recovery credentials.
If you create a new wallet, MetaMask will provide recovery information during setup. Record it carefully and store it somewhere secure and offline.
Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase with anyone. Anyone who obtains it may be able to control the assets associated with that wallet.
Set a strong password for the extension. This helps protect the wallet interface on your device, while your recovery phrase remains the fundamental backup for your self-custody wallet.
Once setup is complete, you can use MetaMask to:
View supported wallet balances
Send and receive supported assets
Connect to compatible dApps
Review transaction requests
Switch between supported networks
Manage available wallet accounts
Always review transaction details carefully before approving a request.
Open the official website of the decentralized application you want to use. Select its wallet connection option and choose MetaMask when available.
A connection request may allow the website to view certain wallet information. A transaction or signature request can have additional consequences, so review every request before confirming it.
Check that the extension is installed and enabled in your browser. Restarting the browser can also resolve temporary extension issues.
Make sure MetaMask is unlocked, the correct account is selected, and the appropriate network is active. Some dApps support only specific networks.
Confirm that you are viewing the correct account and network. Blockchain assets may not appear in the interface if the relevant network or token information has not been configured.
Download MetaMask only through official MetaMask resources or verified browser-extension channels. Avoid links sent through unsolicited emails, messages, advertisements, or social-media accounts.
Never provide your Secret Recovery Phrase or private keys to anyone claiming to be MetaMask support. MetaMask will not need your recovery phrase to troubleshoot an ordinary wallet connection.
Before signing, carefully examine transaction and signature requests, especially when interacting with unfamiliar websites.
