The name START A BIT reflects both a mindset and a learning philosophy.
It encourages young learners to start early — taking small, meaningful steps to explore how technology works and to build real understanding over time.
At the same time, it reflects an important idea in computing: a bit is the most basic unit of information. Every complex system begins from simple building blocks.
We believe that learning should follow the same principle — starting small, building step by step, and growing into deeper knowledge and confidence.
It’s a simple idea: start a bit today, and grow into something much bigger tomorrow.
We believe real understanding comes from doing. Students build real things step by step: they wire circuits, write and test code, and figure out why something doesn't work the first time. In small groups, everyone can learn at their own pace.
We work with the same tools engineers use today, including AI, and we use them the way a good engineer does: to explore ideas and get further, while still understanding what we build and checking that it really works. Along the way, students learn to explain their thinking, ask good questions, and keep going when things get tricky.
What we hope they take with them is not one programming language or gadget, but curiosity, confidence, and a solid foundation for whatever they want to explore next.
Thomas is the founder and main instructor of START A BIT, supported by a small circle of dedicated educators and engineers. Together, they guide young learners in hands-on projects exploring technology beyond standard school courses.
Thomas is a husband, father, and proud dog owner of two Italian greyhounds. He enjoys hands-on projects in computing, networking, and home DIY, as well as mentoring young learners.
He holds a Master’s in Control Theory and Engineering and a Bachelor’s in Telecommunication Engineering. Since 2008, Thomas has built extensive experience in embedded software development across telecommunications and automotive industries, taking on both technical and leadership roles. He has lived and worked in Sweden since 2014.
