What is Durable Medical Equipment?

Durable Medical Equipment refers to medical devices that are designed for repeated use and can withstand prolonged usage. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), DME must meet specific criteria:

1. Prescribed by a Healthcare Provider: DME must be ordered by a licensed healthcare professional as part of a patient’s treatment plan.

2. Intended for Home Use: While some DME is used in clinical settings, it must be suitable for use in the home environment.

3. Durable Nature: The equipment should last for a significant amount of time (usually more than three years) and not be disposable or consumable.
