This Privacy Policy explains how Byte Rush (“Developer,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information in connection with the Android application Starlight, package name com.starlight.camera (“Starlight” or the “App”).
Starlight is designed as an on-device camera application.
The current version of the App does not require an internet connection and does not declare Android’s INTERNET permission.
We do not receive photographs, videos, RAW files, precise location, camera previews, sensor readings, device identifiers, analytics, or advertising data from the App.
The App contains no advertising, analytics, behavioral-tracking, or third-party crash-reporting SDK.
Camera processing, image stacking, astronomical calculations, and time-lapse encoding occur locally on your device.
Camera access is required for photography. Location access is optional and is used only for the Milky Way direction guide while the relevant feature is active in the foreground.
The App does not create user accounts and does not operate a cloud storage service.
Although we do not collect data from the App, the App locally accesses certain device data and creates media files. The sections below explain this in detail.
With camera permission, the App accesses the selected device camera, live preview frames, camera output, and camera capture metadata to provide viewfinding, focus peaking, histograms, manual controls, long exposures, image alignment and stacking, RAW/JPEG capture, star trails, and time-lapse video.
When you initiate a capture, the App may create JPEG photographs, DNG/RAW files, source frames, stacked images, or MP4 time-lapse videos, depending on your settings and device capabilities. These files are processed locally and saved to media storage on your device. The App does not transmit them to us.
Android camera APIs and device camera drivers may include standard metadata in saved media, such as date and time, orientation, exposure, ISO, lens, camera model, and other capture information.
If you choose to grant location permission, the App may access approximate or precise foreground location information supplied by Android, including latitude, longitude, altitude, accuracy, provider, and timestamp.
The App uses this information only to:
calculate the estimated direction and altitude of the Milky Way’s galactic center for your current position and time;
display location accuracy, coordinates, and altitude in the Milky Way guide; and
improve the relevance of the on-screen astronomical guidance.
Location access is optional. It begins only when permission has been granted and the Milky Way guidance mode is active while the App is in the foreground. The App stops requesting location updates when the relevant mode is no longer active or the App leaves the foreground.
Location is processed in memory on your device. The current version of Starlight does not intentionally add GPS coordinates to JPEG, DNG, or MP4 output, and does not send location to the Developer or to an analytics or advertising provider.
You can deny or revoke location permission at any time in Android settings. Doing so disables location-based Milky Way guidance but does not disable the App’s core camera and capture features.
When Milky Way guidance is active, the App may access the device rotation-vector or related orientation sensor to estimate the direction in which the rear camera is pointing. These readings are processed locally in real time, are not retained as a history, and are not transmitted to us.
The App locally reads information necessary to operate safely and adapt to your device, which may include:
available cameras and camera hardware capabilities;
supported exposure times, ISO range, focus range, RAW support, lens characteristics, and field of view;
capture results and sensor timestamps needed to match JPEG and RAW frames;
battery level and device thermal status; and
available local storage needed for capture and processing.
This information is used only to configure features, display status, avoid unsupported operations, match capture frames, and stop or prevent resource-intensive capture when necessary. It is not transmitted to us.
Capture settings and interface choices—such as mode, exposure, ISO, focus, white balance, timer, interval, frame rate, grid, histogram, focus peaking, and night-vision display—may be held locally in memory or Android saved state so the App can operate and restore its interface.
During image stacking and video encoding, the App uses memory and may create temporary files in App-controlled cache or storage. These data are used only to complete the user-requested capture or processing operation and are not transmitted to us.
The current version of the App does not collect or transmit to the Developer:
names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses, or account credentials;
contacts, messages, call logs, calendar data, health data, or financial information;
advertising IDs, Android IDs, IMEI, serial numbers, or other persistent device identifiers;
app-usage analytics, interaction histories, advertising profiles, or diagnostic telemetry;
your existing photo or video library; or
photographs, camera previews, videos, RAW files, location, or motion-sensor readings.
The App does not sell personal information and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising.
Starlight may request the following Android permissions:
Camera: Required for core functionality. Live preview, photography, RAW/JPEG capture, image analysis, stacking, star trails, and time-lapse capture.
Approximate location, Optional. Calculates and displays local Milky Way guidance.
Precise location, Optional. Improves the accuracy of Milky Way direction and altitude calculations.
The App does not request background location permission. It also does not request broad access to read your existing photo library. On supported Android versions, media created by the App is written through Android’s MediaStore without broad storage permission.
Completed photographs and RAW files are generally saved in the device’s shared Pictures/Starlight media location. Completed time-lapse videos are generally saved in Movies/Starlight. These files are under your control and may remain on the device after you close or uninstall the App.
You can view or delete completed media using your device’s gallery, photo, video, or file-management application. Deleting or uninstalling Starlight does not necessarily delete media already published to shared media storage.
Temporary processing data is retained only as needed to perform capture, stacking, or video encoding. The App attempts to release in-memory data and delete temporary encoding files when processing finishes, is canceled, or fails. Residual cache or App-specific files, if any, can be removed by clearing the App’s storage/cache or uninstalling the App through Android settings.
Because the Developer does not operate an App server or receive App data, we generally have no remotely stored App data to access, correct, export, or delete in response to a request.
The App does not transmit or disclose your App data to the Developer, advertisers, analytics providers, data brokers, or other external recipients.
Media saved to shared device storage may be accessible to other applications or services according to your Android permissions and settings. For example, a gallery, cloud-photo backup, device-backup, file manager, or sharing service that you enable may access, sync, upload, or share saved media. Those activities are initiated or controlled through your device, account, or third-party service and are governed by the relevant third party’s privacy policy.
If you manually send us an email or otherwise contact us outside the App, we will receive the information you choose to provide. We will use it to respond to your request, provide support, protect our rights, and comply with law. Contact communications may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary for those purposes and any applicable legal obligations.
Starlight depends on Android operating-system services, device-manufacturer camera and sensor software, location providers, MediaStore, and the app store or distribution service from which you obtained the App. These services operate independently from the Developer and may process information under their own terms and privacy policies.
For example, Google Play or your app store may process purchase, download, device, security, and diagnostic information. Android location services or your device manufacturer may process location in order to provide a location fix. A system gallery or backup service may sync saved photos or videos if you have enabled that feature. We do not control these third-party or platform practices.
The App includes standard AndroidX/Jetpack, Kotlin, and Kotlin Coroutines software libraries used to provide local application functionality. The current build does not integrate an advertising, analytics, cloud-storage, social-login, or third-party crash-reporting SDK.
Starlight reduces privacy risk by processing camera, location, and sensor data locally, avoiding App-operated network transmission, not using advertising or analytics SDKs, requesting location only for an optional feature, and using Android’s scoped MediaStore mechanism for media created by the App.
Your media and local App data remain subject to the security of your device, operating system, lock-screen settings, backups, accounts, and other installed applications. You are responsible for securing your device and choosing whether to enable gallery or cloud backup. No device or storage method can be guaranteed completely secure.
Where data-protection law applies to local processing by the App, camera data is processed to provide the photography functions you request, and optional location is processed based on your choice to enable the Milky Way guide and grant Android permission. You may withdraw location permission at any time without affecting prior lawful processing.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights relating to personal information, including access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, or portability. Because the Developer does not receive or maintain personal information from the App, many of these rights will ordinarily be exercised directly on your device by managing permissions, deleting media, clearing App storage, or uninstalling the App.
You may contact us using the details below if you have a privacy question or believe we hold personal information received through a support communication.
The App does not transmit App data to the Developer and therefore does not create Developer-controlled international transfers of camera, location, sensor, or media data.
Platform providers, app stores, device manufacturers, location providers, gallery services, cloud-backup providers, or email providers may process data in other countries under their own policies and transfer mechanisms.
The App is a general-audience photography tool and is not directed to children under 13. The App does not create accounts, display advertising, or knowingly collect personal information from children.
If you believe that a child has sent personal information to us through a support communication, contact us so that we can review and, where appropriate, delete it.
We may update this Privacy Policy when the App’s features, data practices, legal requirements, or distribution arrangements change. We will update the “Last updated” date and provide any additional notice required by applicable law.
You should review this Privacy Policy periodically. If a future version of the App introduces network services, analytics, advertising, accounts, cloud processing, or other materially different data practices, this Privacy Policy and the relevant in-App disclosures must be updated before those features are used.
