About Us
The Starland Seed Cleaning Plant was incorporated on April 28, 1959; has been in business since 1961 and is located in the Village of Delia. Over the 59 years of this plants existence, it has cleaned over 15,000,000 bushels of grain and has served the community well.
In May of 1961, the Council authorized $34,000.00 towards the construction of the Starland Seed Cleaning Plant. A previous motion in April of 1953 to build the Seed Cleaning Plant in Michichi went to a plebiscite and was resoundingly defeated (Against 255 - For 85). The Starland Seed Cleaning Plant continues to operate today in Delia, and their Board has been very proactive in upgrading the seed cleaning equipment and services available to farmers in the municipality.
The structure of the board in 1961 was 6 shareholder elected directors, 2 County appointed council members and the district Agriculturalist who was appointed by AB Agriculture. With the elimination of the district Agriculturalist in 1993 Starland County chose to add the Ag Fieldman as an agricultural connection between the county and the board.
The plant Managers over the years have been: Fritz Herman, Tom Seely, Wayne Matthews, Ron Seeger, Ron Spangler, Paul Marshall, Dallas Stevens, Jim Andersen, Craig Bramwell, Brad Olsen and currently Stuart Parlane.
Between joint efforts and long days of our manager and 2 local part time workers, 450,000 bushels were pushed through the 50 year old plant in the 2019/2020 year to make it our best cleaning year yet!
Unfortunately, the plant is nearing the end of its useful life in terms of equipment, capacity, productivity and structural integrity so the board has made a decision that we construct a new seed plant to replace the existing facility.
In 2016 the board of Directors started to seriously look at building a new plant and taking all the proper steps to ensure the project would be a success.
Building a new plant is a big undertaking as the estimated cost of a turnkey plant is $6 million. For our board to move forward we required support both financially as well as a commitment to using this facility from our farm community.
On December 17th 2020 we utilized all of our professional resources consisting of Lewis M Carter(Steve Chivilo), Smith & Hersey (Simon Hersey), Endeavour Chartered Accountants (Jeff Faupel), WA Grain (Chris Chivilo), along with our board and Secretary Al Hampton MC'ing, and presented the vision, and feasibility of the new seed plant to our customers and community via Zoom Meeting. Attendance numbers, and positive community feedback made the project incredibly encouraging. The board worked very hard to keep moving forward with the project between 2020 - 2023. There were many hurdles, but the project was successfully completed.
In the fall of 2023 commissioning started and by October 15, 2023 the new plant was open for business at the new location minutes north of Delia on Highway 851 at SW-17-31-17-W4M. In the first season at the new plant will have cleaned nearly 650,000 bushels of grain.
