There are phases in life when we feel low, dull and almost numb. Everyone of us has encountered such monotonous phases in life. It's like stepping into a dusty attic and locking the door from inside. We do it willingly, trying to escape the chaos outside.
Slowly, the dust settles, and the air becomes stale, and we long for that vibrancy. A new perspective, a fresh essence can snap us back to reality.
Perfumes have the power to do the same. Many times, a simple act, like changing our signature fragrances can help us regain vitality and get back to our regular lives.
I have faced a similar situation and wish to narrate the same for others, who are waiting for a push. It helps reclaim the lost power easily after we have completed recharging our energies.
A few years back, I got stuck in an uninspiring loop. The long, tiresome schedules, work and travel weighed a lot on my energies, draining it faster than ever. As a result, I lost track of my ambitions and became aimless for a phase. The work continued but never with the passion I had before. It was like an endless loop, a dark phase that made me feel like an automaton.
You won’t believe me when I say this, but I regained my energy through a simple bottled fragrance.
One evening, while getting ready for an event, I reached for a bottle I had never worn before.
The label read - “Oud Beyond the Wall”
A creation by Paris Corner, it was a unisex perfume with notes of warm saffron, spices and blends of smoky oud. Subtle floral accords balanced the scent giving depth but never overpowering. A dynamic essence, it felt like warm, somewhat musky and amber, because of the base notes.
I applied it without thinking. As a connoisseur, I have almost a hundred bottles in my collection. But never before did I pay too much attention to them, let alone think about their impact.
However, that evening, something shifted in me, almost like magic. I felt more confident after spending a long time choosing my attire. The event too turned out to be quite an unexpected one. I found myself smiling, almost grinning, as conversations flowed naturally.
For the first time in weeks, I felt alive and happy, not to mention super confident.
Now, the naysayers will say that I’m overexaggerating. But those who know, know exactly what I’m trying to convey here. It’s not about magic or some wizardry spell.
It was renewal, a 100% scientific and psychologically proven phenomena.
According to studies in aromatherapy, perfumes not only help us smell good but also impact the way we feel. For example, some citrus and floral scents, like bergamot, jasmine, lemon, etc., can have a profound effect on moods, reducing stress and monotony. It’s like that wave of push you need when you are down with something.
Then come fragrances with deeper notes, like amber or sandalwood. Perfumes with these notes generally calm the mind, helping us stay balanced and grounded.
This is not magic but pure science. Our sense of smell is directly linked to our brain’s limbic system that handles emotions and memories. Even a few whiffs can be powerful reminders of good and positive times, filling you with energies you were struggling for just a moment ago.
Further, some studies also reveal that fragrances not only help uplift moods but also ease social interactions that seem challenging. In other words, it’s like this mental reset you need after a long, dull phase.
And that’s exactly what happened to me as well. By choosing the bottle of luxury unisex perfume, I could switch back to my previous energetic self, something that I have been missing quietly.
After that incident (or should I say a pleasant accident), I have been doing some digging in my free time about aromas that help transform boring or dull phases into energetic renewals. I also took some time out to explore and evaluate my personal collection (something I had never done before).
And these are my observations regarding uplifting scents:
If you seek some relief after a long, noisy commute, a simple blend of lavender and neroli, present in some luxury floral perfumes, can help relax your mind.
Feeling somewhat dull in the morning due to lack of sleep? A breath of sheer peony and soft white tea can recharge your mood.
Wooden perfumes, especially with warm notes of cedar and oakmoss, can be quite effective after tiring work nights.
If you’re tired of monotonous routines, try some smoky birch and leather woven with amber to bring the vitality back.
Well, I need to mention something here. It’s not necessary that every perfume will work the exact same way for everyone. We all have varied olfactory senses that can change the perception. Generally, wooden perfumes tend to calm the mind and keep you grounded, while floral and citrus notes do the work of eliminating dullness.
Now that I have narrated my experience of renewal through perfume, I would like to know yours as well. It need not be about luxury perfumes only. If there has been anything, like any aroma that changed your perspective and helped you regain lost energies, feel free to share with me. I would like to include it in my future studies, in case a second dull phase or something else hits me again.
Oh and by the way, I collected my cherished bottle from Stardust Perfume, the online hub for some of the most exotic and unisex perfumes in the world. Yes, they collect globally-popular fragrances to feature in their curated collection. From woody whiffs to floral and citrus essence, they have it all. You can take a look at their collection once.
