High School Rocketry
Implemented at participating high schools and JROTC programs in an after-school setting, with the focus of our engineering project on designing and testing custom-built rockets through participation in the American Rocketry Challenge.
STARBASE Louisiana would like to recognize the recipient of the 2023 STARBASE Louisiana Inc Scholarship, Miss Elizabeth Shum! Elizabeth is a senior at Caddo Magnet High School and has been on our rocketry team since her freshman year. Not only has she accumulated a multitude of academic accolades but she has also held numerous leadership roles within our program. Our rocketry program at CMHS wouldn't be the same without her help and dedication. We want to wish Elizabeth all of the best in her upcoming adventures - we know she is going to achieve great things!
Rocketry After School
STARBASE Louisiana provides instruction one day a week during the school year and 7 launch sessions to test and collect data. This is a year long aerospace engineering project that focuses on designing rockets to compete in the national contest with the ability to explore advanced concepts that will include options to construct and program guidance and other avionics systems to achieve precise altitude and payload deployment goals.
For the past three years we have had teams qualify for Nationals in the TARC Rockety Challenge.
2021- A team from Parkway and a team from Caddo Magnet High School competed at the National Finals in Austin, TX for a chance to claim the $25,000 first place prize. We may not have taken home the 1st place prize we did have a team place in the Top 10 in the nation and the memories that were made are priceless!
2022- A combined team of Parkway and Haughton High School and a second combined team of Caddo Magnet High and Haughton High School traveled to Washington DC to compete in this year's Nationals. Chomp and Men In Black not only placed in the top 5% in the ENTIRE nation but they were also crowd favorites, with Chomp's shark onesie costumes winning the team a cash prize of $500!
2023 - The Haughton High School Rocketry team received the distinct honor of being the first JROTC team to qualify for Nationals in the history of the American Rocketry Challenge! Sadly, Big Hero 6's first flight was disqualified on a technicality. The cadets did everything right and would have had an amazing score. We are incredibly proud of their resilience and hard work!
