About halfway through the Silver Screen Edition restoration, people started to hear about our project, and offers to lend us prints for scanning came flooding in. Somebody sent us a Technicolor print to scan, and somebody else who had already had one scanned sent us that to work on too. These were better sources than the LPP print, and at higher resolution. It was tempting to abandon the SSE and start over with the new sources, but ultimately we decided we should finish what we had started, not just to preserve the LPP, but also because of all the experience we would gain (and be able to apply) to the next project.

If you would like to watch the Project 4k77, 4k80, and 4k83 scans of Star Wars (which are essentially the original versions of the print, no special edition crappiness) then you need to visit this forum.

I know that 4K80 is currently in the works and 4K77 and 83 are available for viewing, but I wanted to know HOW to access them? I know there's pages on starwarstrilogy.com that discuss these projects, but I have not been able to find where to access/download/purchase the finished products.

I may have liked Star Wars more watching it this time than ever before. I liked it well enough when I was six (and may secretly have found Hardware Wars an improvement), and when I was nine I liked Empire even better, but I went for the weird starting at a young age. By the time of Jedi (which I only saw a paltry three times in the theater at age 12) I prefered movies by Carpenter, Cronenberg, Landis, Romero, and Gilliam. For that matter, I loved Raiders of the Lost Ark more than I ever loved the Star Wars universe.

Look at this awesome film that was made in the '70s ... I want to show that to people. I wanted to show my brother. He was three when I started working and I showed it to him when he was five and he loved it.

4k77 is a fascinating fan restoration of Star Wars. The first one, before it was the fourth one, before it had the subtitle "A New Hope" bolted onto it to help distinguish the brand from the film. This is not to be confused with 4k80, a restoration project of Empire Strikes Back that is currently in progress, or 4k83, a semi-completed effort to restore Return of the Jedi.

Inside of the 4k77 project there are various forks and branches. The people who have undertaken this project are slavish to the act of preservation, consequently if there's a version of their restoration that is made available to the public, they retain these outputs as subversions available for people to download through their private p2p network (a minor hoop to jump through that prevents broad attention on the project).

I first saw Star Wars on the second week of its first UK theatrical run, it was a cold, grey day in early January 1978 and my dad drove the family up to London. My first overriding memory of this trip was seeing two Stormtroopers in the window of a shoe shop. I remember queuing outside Odeon Leicester Square, standing at the doorway entrance looking at the lobby cards proudly displaying tantalising images of what was to come. I remember being amazed at the size of the cinema (we were sat in the circle, towards the left quarter as you view the screen), never before had I seen a screen so big, and the theatre was so ornate with plush red seats. Then the lights went down and that iconic score from John Williams started, prefacing the opening crawl and that giant Star Destroyer coming from overhead. I was sold. And so too was a generation.

Haunted by nightmares of the death of his wife, Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman), Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is spurned on by Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) to embrace the dark side of the force, which he promises will save Padme from certain death. The galaxy has changed forever. The stars have aligned for the destruction of the Jedi order and the fall of the galactic democracy, all leading to a final confrontation between the learner and his master, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). 006ab0faaa
