Another method is to bring your own lights. I personally like to use very dim stationary LED lights that I put up on a light stand. The brightness is set very low so that you can use the same exposure for the sky and foreground and you are not required to blend. When balanced properly, you should barely be able to see the effect of the light panel with the naked eye.

The light stand lets you raise your panel and prevent strong shadows on the foreground. You can also feather the light by pointing it partially away from the subject. If your light is too bright (a common problem with most panels) you can either add extra diffusion by placing a cloth over the front or try bounce lighting by pointing your light at a large rock wall or other surface so that your subject is lit indirectly.

It takes time to walk the entire length so I set my camera to a two minute exposure. If you cannot light your entire subject in that time, you can also take multiple images, light different areas in each, and combine them in post. Note that with a two minute exposure there will be too much trailing in the stars, so you will want to combine the foreground with a separate sky exposure.

The previous methods all involved getting more light, either from the fading sun, the moon, or bringing it yourself. This method is to simply use much longer exposures with star light. For example, I might take a 20s shot for the sky and blend it with a 5 minute shot for the foreground. Usually your exposure for the foreground needs to be at least 4-8x longer than the sky depending on your tolerance for noise.

Many of us have grown up with the ability to stargaze, the ethereal experience of knowing we are so small compared to all that exists far beyond our gaze. But this is not the truth for everyone, especially city dwellers who lose more of the night sky each year due to light pollution.

The hope is that by spreading awareness of light pollution and its harmful effects, we might bring back the beauty of gazing up into a sky full of stars for generations to come. A nighttime with a robust ecosystem.

One night I again looked up into the heavens and discovered the stars were still there. And the moon was still there, too! Oh my, how long had it been since my spirit felt like dancing in the moonlight? Too long. Much too long. And now my bones ache sometimes. Sometimes my step is a bit slower and sometimes I can still feel the pain.

You may observe that the moon is very bright compare to the landscape it surrounds. In fact, most moonscapes are composite shots : one long exposure for the landscape itself and one short for the moon. Then both exposures are fused within the image processor to use the best part of both images.

Other tip to photograph bigger moons (other than long focal length), the moon can appear bigger when it rises and sets. Also, depending on your geographic location and season, the landscape can also be more bright as it may not be quite night time. In these conditions, you may pull a single exposure moonscape.

But, if you are looking at creating some stars from your point light sources...then it pays to know your lens. Odd-number of aperture petals will have more points and those points can be made smaller and larger by controlling the aperture.

As the moon moves from a new phase to a crescent in the evening sky, dark sky observing can continue. Astronomers either wait until after the moon sets or observe in a part of the sky far from the moon. During this lunar phase, the moonlight is not very bright. That changes as the moon grows in illumination. But not in the way you might think.

Sometimes, events like the appearance of a comet, a meteor shower or aurora occur during a bright moon. There is simply nothing the astronomer can do about that. As for comets, eventually, the moon moves out of the sky, or the comet moves to the morning or evening sky. For meteor showers, which occur on nearly the same day each year, you can observe before moonrise or after moonset. And if you must deal with the moon, hide it behind something so that its light does not shine directly upon your surroundings.

Bottom line: The best phase of the moon for stargazing depends on what you want to do. Some enjoy watching the moon itself. On the other hand, people using telescopes avoid the moon because its glare interferes with deep-sky objects.

The moonlight I remembered was years ago. I walked with him along the coast. The white and navy blue waves softly blended with the sand. The summer breeze touched my silk dress, while the stars shined in the sky. His hand held mine tight, it was him who brighten my eyes and expelled the darkness from my life. We walked, talked and smiled the whole night as if the time stood by. Later, we went on our different paths, what left is the bright moonlight of that night inscribed in my mind.

Moonlight stands for the ties between families as well. Moon is my first name. Before I left China my dad told me that every time when he looks up at the sky and sees the moon he is thinking of me. When I raise my eyes in the other side of the world, I know we are facing the same moon and I am thinking of my family too. Over the past 10 years I have been away from home, I find peace by sitting under the moonlight and drinking some tea that mama packed for me hoping they are fine back home.

In the lunar calendar, the 15th of August is our moon festival. On that day, the moon should be full and every family member ought to be together enjoying the moonlight and eating mooncake. When I was younger, I never followed this tradition, complained this was too old fashion and that I wanted to hang out with my friend instead. As the years have gone, I have come to gradually understand that it is not about the moon but the family ties and bonds.

However, Yi's apprentice Meng, was very jealous and forced Chang'e to give over the medicine, Chang'e was very frightened of Meng, and in a moment of desperation, she swallowed the medicines all at once Few moments later, her body became really light, so she was forced to fly to the moon as a result of taking the pills all by herself. The Chinese god felt too sympathy to lock her down in the moon. Therefore every year, in the day of on the 15th of August, Chang'e and Yi were allowed to see each other from the earth to moon.

During these times, there is no bright Moon to wash out the light from fainter stars. As a result, you will be able to see thousands of stars with just your naked eye, this compared to just a few hundred at other times.

Summer months mean long days and short nights and, therefore, significantly reduce stargazing opportunities. Hours of morning and evening twilight are longer during the summer. The skies take longer to get dark after sunset and get lighter earlier before sunrise leaving only a short period to view dark skies. Around the summer solstice (the longest day), it hardly gets dark at all!

The night sky is a glittering dome peppered with stars, planets, and passing meteors. For millennia, our ancestors experienced a dark night sky. Cultures around the world told stories about the constellations and used the stars as a calendar. Only for the past few generations have humans been denied the chance to stand in awe of the heavens. Artificial lighting and atmospheric pollutants wash out the light of the stars, making them less visable or completely absent.

Although Indiana Dunes National Park is near urban areas, the lakeshore offers unexpectedly dark skies. Lake Michigan's massive footprint to the north keeps the sky near the lakefront much darker than surrounding areas. 006ab0faaa
