F1 in Schools at STAR: Engineering the Future with Apple Technology
F1 in Schools is a prestigious international STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) competition where students design, manufacture, and race miniature CO₂-powered Formula 1 cars using industry-standard engineering software and processes. At Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR), the programme goes beyond speed—it's a dynamic platform to nurture innovation, collaboration, leadership, and technical excellence among our students.
In 2024, STAR elevated its F1 in Schools initiative to new heights with the enthusiastic participation of several student-led teams. This year, students integrated Apple technology, particularly the iPad, into every stage of the project—transforming their workflow to mirror real-world engineering environments. The journey began with a series of intensive workshops and internal team selections, enhanced by the use of apps such as Keynote for presentations, Numbers for project management and budgeting, and Freeform for collaborative brainstorming.
During the engineering phase, students utilized the iPad as a powerful companion tool—sketching initial designs with the Apple Pencil, annotating CAD drafts, and analyzing performance data in real-time. Research, documentation, and media production were all handled professionally using apps like Pages, GarageBand, and iMovie, enabling students to create sleek portfolios, digital journals, and promotional content with industry-level quality.
With the support of Apple’s ecosystem, the F1 in Schools experience at STAR has become more than just a competition—it's a launchpad for future engineers, innovators, and leaders equipped with both technical expertise and digital fluency.
The F1 in Schools SBP National Bootcamp STEM Challenge 2024, held from 16th to 18th August 2024 at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Bangi, was a major initiative aimed at introducing the F1 in Schools programme to students from Fully Residential Schools (SBP) across Malaysia.
Organised by the F1 in Schools UKM Club, in collaboration with alumni from Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Empat and the official F1 in Schools Malaysia team, the bootcamp was led by key figures including Dr. Radzi from UKM’s Department of Automotive Engineering, Dr. Aini from SBP, and En. Nazrin from F1 in Schools Malaysia.
Among the selected schools, Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) proudly participated in this bootcamp, sending a team of passionate students eager to explore real-world STEM applications. STAR's delegates engaged enthusiastically in all components of the programme, further reinforcing the school’s strong commitment to innovation and engineering excellence.
The bootcamp provided participants with opportunities to:
Attend introductory briefings on the F1 in Schools competition
Watch live demonstrations of F1 car design using CAD/CAM software
Participate in hands-on sessions to build and test model cars
Learn core principles of aerodynamics, mechanics, and engineering creativity
STAR’s involvement in this bootcamp reflects its continued efforts to empower students with future-ready skills and to remain at the forefront of STEM education in Malaysia.
Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) proudly hosted the F1 in Schools State Final Perak 2024 on 4th November 2024 at the STAR Student Centre. This event brought together talented young engineers from across the state to compete in one of Malaysia’s most dynamic STEM-based competitions, aimed at nurturing innovation, teamwork, and real-world engineering skills among secondary school students.
As part of STAR’s strong commitment to the F1 in Schools initiative, the school fielded four teams:
➡️ Kelodan
➡️ Vaquita
➡️ Panglima
➡️ Hydras Racing
Demonstrating outstanding performance, STAR teams clinched multiple special awards:
🏆 Best Scrutineering Award – Vaquita
🏆 Best Engineering Award – Panglima
🏎️ Fastest Car Award – Panglima
In an exceptional showcase of engineering excellence and teamwork, STAR secured all three top podium positions:
🥇 Champion – Vaquita
🥈 1st Runner-up – Kelodan
🥉 2nd Runner-up – Panglima
These three top-performing teams will proudly represent the state of Perak in the upcoming F1 in Schools National Final, scheduled for February 2025.
This achievement reflects STAR’s continuous pursuit of excellence in STEM education, and its dedication to producing future-ready innovators through hands-on learning and competitive platforms like F1 in Schools. Congratulations to all the winning teams and those involved in making this event a success.
Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR), Perak proudly represented the state at the STEM Racing Malaysia National Finals 2025, a national-level competition that celebrates innovation, engineering, and teamwork through the rebranded F1 in Schools platform. The event brought together 50 elite student racing teams from across the country in a high-stakes competition that tested their technical, creative, and collaborative capabilities.
STAR was represented by three passionate and dedicated teams:
🚗 Team Vaquita – Code: T02
🚗 Team Panglima – Code: T11
🚗 Team Kelodan – Code: T16
All three teams demonstrated grit, excellence, and strong engineering fundamentals throughout the competition. In a highly competitive field, Team Kelodan secured the 19th position overall, proudly flying the flag for Perak and STAR on the national stage.
While STAR’s teams did not make the podium this year, their presence at the National Finals reflects the school’s unwavering commitment to STEM education, innovation, and experiential learning. These students are role models for future engineers, embodying values of creativity, perseverance, and teamwork.
At the Aramco F1 in Schools World Finals 2024 in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Valour Special Project (Valour SP) — a pioneering team comprising top students from three renowned Fully Residential Schools — achieved significant success, showcasing Malaysia's engineering talent on the global stage
Among the team members was Amin Bin Mohd Hariz, a 14-year-old student from Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR), Perak, who played a key role in securing the prestigious Verbal Presentation Award. Valour SP stood out among 55 international teams, earning recognition for their outstanding presentation skills and achieving an impressive top-10 global ranking.
Amin’s contribution not only demonstrates STAR’s commitment to developing articulate, confident leaders in STEM but also highlights the school’s capacity to nurture students capable of international distinction.
