Orthopedic Trauma

Ortho Grand Rounds - Anesthesia in the Elderly (FINAL)

Orthopedic Anesthesia MSD Grand Rounds 2020

Welcome to Ortho Trauma - 500P OR 19

Welcome to your ortho-trauma rotation! This special rotation has you working in the trauma room for 2 weeks with our orthopedic trauma surgeons Dr. Gardener, Dr. Bishop, Dr. Goodnough, and Dr. Lowenberg. You may often look at the next day's schedule and it may appear you are unscheduled, when in fact there are just no ortho-trauma cases booked yet. By the morning there invariably will be cases to do! Please still come early to read about the day's cases, set up the room, and touch base with your attending. As you can imagine, flexibility, being ready for anything, skill in caring for patients with many comorbidities as well as the elderly will come in handy. I hope you enjoy your rotation and as always, please reach out to the faculty with any feedback on how to make things better.

Conditions Treated

  • Pelvic and acetabular fractures: often the result of a traumatic injury, pelvic and hip fractures require rapid and precise treatment and, in some cases, one or more surgical procedures.

  • Open fractures: also called compound fracture, occurs when the the bone exits and is visible through the skin, or a deep wound that exposes the bone through the skin.

  • Articular and periarticular fractures: types of fractures that occur around or immediately adjacent a joint or damage cartilage.

  • Traumatic injuries of the spine: due to a traumatic injury that can either result in a bruise, partial tear, or a complete in the spinal cord; resulting in decreased mobility, sensation, and body organ function below the level of the injury.

  • Fracture Prevention: prophylactic stabilization of bone likely to break due to pathology such as cancer

  • Fragility Fractures: often a result of a fall or other accident, underlying poor bone quality or bone mineral density loss can cause fragility fractures. The Fracture Prevention Program identifies causes of fragility fractures and reduces the risk of injury by optimizing bone health.

  • Multiple system injuries

  • Post-traumatic injuries, injuries that occur after trauma to bones, joint and muscles.

  • Long bones injuries: specific types of bones that serve the function of providing strength and mobility.
