Stanford Orthopedic Anesthesia - Welcome!

In the United States, more than 1.9 MILLION hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed annually. This makes joint replacement surgery one of the most common operation an anesthesiologist will encounter. These operations can be beneficial for patients who suffer from osteoarthritis or other painful hip and knee conditions. To familiarize yourself with the surgical steps involved in these cases, please refer to the videos on the orthopedic website.

Our orthopedic surgeon colleagues that perform joint replacement surgery include Dr. Maloney, Dr. Goodman, Dr. Huddleston, Dr. Miller, Dr. Amanatullah, and Dr. Hooper. Each surgeon is different in their preferences for peripheral nerve blocks for postoperative pain control, intraoperative speed (which can greatly affect our intraoperative anesthetic planning), and their intraoperative anesthetic preferences. Furthermore, many complex patients with formidable surgical and anesthetic needs are referred to Stanford. The combination of so many moving parts can make working in the joint room challenging – so please use this guide as a roadmap to planning your anesthetic.

Also, please find useful resources and reading related to our busy orthopedic trauma anesthesia and surgery services. Our orthopedic trauma surgery colleagues include Dr. Gardener, Dr. Bishop, Dr. Goodnough, and Dr. Lowenberg.
