Participation Details

Time commitment

Project timeframe: Sampling will take place from Feb 2 to early-May, 2019.

Weekly sampling: Volunteers aim to sample once per week for 12 weeks. Choose any day of the week and time that is convenient for you.

Sampling time: Sampling will take about 20-40 min per week, but will get faster as you become more familiar with the process.

Sampling details

All of the supplies required for sampling will be provided for free to volunteers. We will hand out sampling kits and provide in-person instruction the first week in February. Volunteers will also receive detailed written instructions about when, where, and how to sample.

Volunteers do all of their sampling at one beach (Linda Mar, Seabright, or Main) of their choosing.

Each week, volunteers will:

1. Measure water salinity and color at 5 or more locations on the beach near the river/creek mouth and record data on a data sheet.

2. Collect one water sample and deposit it at a nearby drop-off location (where we will pick it up for additional measurements in the lab).

Participation requirements

Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

Participants must be able to use a free GPS app on their phone. Instructions will be provided.

Participants must be able to collect water samples in ankle-deep water with incoming waves.
