Standoff: Phone Challenge is a focus and mindfulness game that challenges you to put your phone face-down on a flat surface and resist the urge to pick it up. The longer you stay focused, the higher your rank!
Earn badges based on your performance:

Share your records with friends, challenge them to beat your time, and see who truly has the willpower to stay off their phone.
Standoff uses a combination of your device's accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and camera to determine when your phone is placed face-down on a stable surface. The timer only starts once the phone is both stationary and the screen is covered.
The app uses the front camera and ambient light sensor solely to verify that the phone is placed face-down. No photos or videos are ever recorded, stored, or transmitted. These permissions are essential for the core game mechanic to work correctly.
Make sure your phone is resting on a flat, stable surface (not a soft surface like a pillow). The app requires both stability and darkness to confirm placement. Also, ensure you have granted camera and motion sensor permissions in Settings > Privacy > Standoff. If the issue persists, try restarting the app.
"Busted" means the app detected that you moved or picked up your phone during a challenge session. Your elapsed time at that moment becomes your final record for that round. You can choose to play again or share your record with friends.
After completing a session, you can share your record along with a QR code. When a friend scans the code, if they already have the app installed, it opens directly to a challenge screen pre-loaded with your record time. If they don't have the app, the QR code takes them to the App Store to download it first.
No. Standoff is designed with battery efficiency in mind. After the timer starts, the screen dims to a power-saving mode with only a faint clock visible. This significantly reduces battery usage during long sessions.
No. Standoff does not collect, store, or share any personal data. All game records are stored locally on your device. The app does not require an account or internet connection to play. Sensor data (camera, accelerometer, light) is processed in real-time on-device and is never transmitted.
Incoming calls or notifications that cause the app to go to the background may interrupt the session. We recommend enabling Do Not Disturb mode on your device before starting a challenge for the best experience.
Standoff: Phone Challenge requires iOS 14.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone. The app requires access to the accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and front camera.
If you experience issues, please try the following steps:
Make sure you have the latest version of the app from the App Store.
Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera and ensure Standoff has permission.
Go to Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness and ensure access is enabled.
Restart the app by swiping it away from the app switcher and reopening it.
Restart your device if the problem persists.
