A bizarre kidnapping, a mysterious disappearance, crimes of passion and intoxication, accidents, poisoning, thefts, murders, a gunfight, and more. This book contains events of long forgotten tragic stories of Standish, Maine. These stories are a reminder that Standish wasn’t just a quiet, bucolic farming and lumbering town.
Something happens somewhere, every single day. From the mundane to the momentous, it doesn't matter, as almost everything is lost or forgotten with the passage of time."
This book is a part of the mission of The Standish Historical Society and our efforts to preserve and present the history of Standish, Maine. This honor has been entrusted to us by the town of Standish and the Standish community. Thankfully, we have diaries, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, town records, photos, books, and other items that have kept the record of those events. Every one of those daily events were notable in someone's life and sometimes of interest to the rest of us.
This book is a day to day, every day of the year, sampling of events that have happened in Standish; a sort of "non-calendar." We are including many interesting events, mostly long since forgotten, that should be shared.
All the money raised from the sales of this book goes to the Standish Historical Society to maintain our historical collection and museum as well as for our building fund to help restore The Old Red Church and to properly store our massive collection freeing up space in the museum.
On This Day In Standish and other books will also be for sale at our events during the year and at the Old Red Church Museum when open.
