Description
I contributed to Felipe Pepe's CRPG Book by penning a piece on S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, in which I explained the reasons for it being such a fascinating FPS/RPG hybrid that still holds up more than a decade later.
—
My goal with this endeavor was to study a game that I love by dissecting its chief qualities (as well as missteps) in order to better understand the developers' vision and how they went about implementing said vision via mechanics, narrative, aesthetics, and technology.
—
My process for penning the piece went as follows:
Start a new playthrough and make enough progress to get a clear understanding of the gameplay, narrative, and presentation.
Identify the game’s best and lesser qualities.
Sandwich the discussion of said qualities between an introduction that details the game’s premise and a conclusion that highlights the title’s legacy and how well it holds up to this day.
Fetch images and quotes that best demonstrate the points I make in my article.
Submit my draft to the book’s author.
Do additional polish passes that address issues pertaining to grammar and clarity before final submission.
