Fathers' Club
The Fathers’ Club of St. Agnes Cathedral School was established in 1992 to provide fathers, grandfathers, and other interested members of the community the opportunity to support the education of their children. The Fathers’ Club is a dynamic organization that raises funds for the maintenance and improvement of the school facilities. Monthly meetings familiarize the members with the programs and needs of the school and afford the members the opportunity to socialize. The President of the Fathers’ Club is an ex-officio member of the St. Agnes Cathedral School Board.
Mothers' Club
The Mothers’ Club of St. Agnes Cathedral School, founded in 1938, has functioned continually for 82 years. The primary objective of the Mothers’ Club is to provide quality education for the students by raising funds for enrichment programs. The Club’s activities are both social and educational in nature. The Mothers’ Club cooperates with other organizations connected with the Cathedral Parish to assist in furthering their goals and ideals.
Parent-School Association
The St. Agnes Cathedral Parent Home-School Association helps parents and teachers acquire an appreciation for the ideals of Catholic education and promotes a clearer understanding of their mutual educational responsibilities. Membership consists of parents or guardians of students attending St. Agnes Cathedral School, its Co-Principals and faculty, clergy and other interested adults of the parish. The Parent-School Association plans activities and programs that are directly related to the educational development of the students. The members are also a source of service to the school community. The Co-Chairs of the Home-School Association are ex-officio members of the St. Agnes Cathedral School Board.
St. Agnes School Board
The school board is an elected body consisting of adult members of St. Agnes Cathedral Parish and parents and guardians of children attending St. Agnes Cathedral School. It was established to develop and formulate educational policies for St. Agnes Cathedral School and recommend them to the rector and school administration.
The board consists of twelve members. Each member is elected for a term of three years and is eligible for one subsequent term. The rector, co-principals, and presidents of the parent organizations are ex-officio members.
Education and Formation
Religious Education
The parish religious education program exists to assist parents in their responsibility in forming their children in the Catholic Christian faith into which they have been baptized. The parish, in cooperation with parents seeks to inform the children through instruction, prayer, service, and values.
In order to serve the needs of our children we offer (1) a family centered program, (2) a home based and (3) a parish based program. Appropriate student, catechist and parent materials are provided. Volunteer catechists are interviewed, screened and trained to teach moderately sized classes. Materials and ongoing support and training are provided through the director.
All of these programs provide opportunities for children with special needs to participate. In addition, religious education offers sacramental preparation for children. The parents are an important partner in this preparation; opportunities for adult faith formation are provided throughout the child’s faith journey. In cooperation with our school principles, the religious education director prepares the liturgies for the parish’s first reconciliation, communion and confirmation celebrations.
Adult Faith Formation
Provides opportunities for members of the parish to deepen their understanding of their faith.
Baptismal Preparation
Parents seeking to have their child baptized are asked to contact the Pastoral Ministry Office to set up an interview. At this interview, one receives pertinent materials and information and can raise any questions as needed. For the first and second child, parents are asked to attend a class before the baptism. Team couples and members of the the Cathedral staff discuss the role parents play in the faith life of their children and how this faith might be nurtured and provide a theological reflection on the Sacrament of Baptism.
Pre-Cana
The St. Agnes Pre-Cana program works with those engaged couples who are entering into the Sacrament of marriage.
R.C.I.A.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a rite of the Roman Catholic Church through which unbaptized adults or children (over seven years old) are initiated into the Catholic Church. Non-Catholic Christians, who desire to become Catholic, are also welcomed into Full Communion of the Catholic Church through the R.C.I.A.
R.C.I.A. is an ongoing process. Those who desire to become Catholic may begin the process anytime during the year. The process of becoming Catholic takes place in stages according to the individual needs of the participant.
Parish Service and Outreach
Bereavement Ministry
Individuals who help others who have suffered a loss of a loved one. Each facilitator is required to undergo training in grief and loss in order to lead a group and create an environment where people can gather and express their own grief, learn more about the process of grieving and, through prayer and ritual, mourn the loss of a loved one. The group led by the facilitator is close-ended and meets for a series of seven sessions.
Blood Drive
The parish conducts blood drives each spring and fall under the auspices of Long Island Blood Services with the assistance of the St. Agnes Council of the Knights of Columbus. Information about the blood drives will appear in the bulletin. Anyone 17 years or older, in good health and weighing at least 100 pounds may donate blood. (16 year olds need parental consent and if you are over 75 you will need to bring a note from your physician.) Everyone must have picture ID with signature (i.e. driver's license).
Consider donating your blood to save lives. If you are unable to donate, consider donating your time to help during the drives registering donors after Masses, making phone calls or helping with hospitality during the drive.
Giving Tree
The Giving Tree began in 1994 as a St. Agnes Youth Group activity and two years later expanded to the entire parish. Since then several thousand ornaments have been distributed every year by hundreds of adults and children from St. Agnes. Our generous parishioners donate thousands of gifts after which the Giving Tree committee swings into action—sorting, organizing and preparing the gifts for distribution.
The gifts are donated to various outreach and charitable organizations which use the gifts to make the Christmas season brighter for those less fortunate among us.
The Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal and benevolent organization of Catholic men witnessing to the faith by their camaraderie and their works of charity. St. Agnes Council 2548 sponsors several youth organizations and activities such as the parish-based Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops and annual essay competitions and the basketball free-throw contest. The council assists the parish in all areas of stewardship with its members’ time, talent and treasure, which they offer both individually and collectively. Its charitable works include financial assistance to seminarians and to other worthy organizations and causes. Among the many activities that the Council sponsors, promotes and supports is the Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade.
Throughout the year, members and their families have the opportunity to enjoy and participate in many religious and social activities. The St. Agnes Council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month in the Youth Ministry Room of the Parish Ministry Building.
Parish Outreach
Based on love of neighbor and the love of God, St. Agnes Parish Outreach provides assistance to our brothers and sisters in need throughout the year. For over 34 years it has been helping people from all parts of the Rockville Centre community. Our mandate comes from St. Matthew’s account of the final judgment, when we will be judged on our love of neighbor as well as our love of God. Among the services Outreach provides are: Food, clothing and furniture assistance, Information and referral, Advocacy, Assistance to families in securing home health aides, companions and house cleaners, Networking with the St. Vincent de Paul society, the Mayor’s office and the Economic Opportunity Council, Delivering Meals on Wheels to the frail elderly of our community, Holiday baskets for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter for the needy, Sponsoring a Christmas toy drive, You can participate in many ways: by donating food, clothing, furniture, gift cards, cash or your time, and, especially, your prayers.
Parish Party Committee
The Committee prepares for the annual parish party held every fall in the Parish Center. The parish party provides an opportunity for the parish to enjoy an evening of conversation, music, dancing, dining and enjoyment and to honor someone who has made significant contributions to the parish. Each spring the Rector asks a different couple to chair the event and form a committee to organize the event and produce the journal which is a major fund raiser for the parish. Besides making the party a reality, the committee has proven to be a vehicle wherein friendships are developed and nurtured.
Pastoral Council
Pastors know that Christ did not mean for them to shoulder the entire mission of the Church themselves. A pastor needs to consult with the laity who in turn have the right to express their views and concerns to the pastor. An important structure to foster this collaboration is the parish pastoral Council. The Council is generally comprised of eleven members of the parish and the Rector. The Council could be envisioned as a “think tank” for the pastoral staff. It reviews the Parish mission statement and seeks better ways for the parish to envision its goals. The Council meets once a month.
Parish Website Team
The Web Site Team of the Parish of St. Agnes Cathedral is a voluntary group of parishioners, open to all ages. The team exists to answer the challenge of searching out, evaluating and implementing ways in which the internet and technology can be used to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. We do this in order that people may be assisted in living out their baptismal calling; that people may continue to grow into becoming one body; and to extend our parish’s faith and knowledge.
The team directly maintains our parish website (www.stagnescathedral.org) as well as assists St. Agnes Cathedral School in maintaining the school’s website (www.stagnes-school.org). The parish website is maintained as a primary source of timely and value added information for our parishioners and internet visitors. In addition, the team administers the e-mail accounts of the pastoral staff and parish ministries. Assistance and technology advice is provided to all parish organizations and ministries in meeting the needs of their members. New members are always welcome as we look for ways to enhance our parish presence on the internet.
Respect Life
The mission of the Respect Life Group is to “promote the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death through prayer, education, advocacy and peaceful presence.” The group meets monthly September through June. It participates in the annual events—“March for Life” in Washington D.C., “Stand-Up for Life” in Huntington and the “National Night of Prayer.” The group also prays the rosary in front of the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Hempstead; hosts educational speakers on current life issues; promotes boycotts of companies that support Planned Parenthood and abortion; urges legislative action in support of human life and fundraises for organizations that support life-affirming alternatives to abortion.
St. Vincent DePaul Society
Advocates and educates on behalf of the poor and elderly. The Society works closely with the Parish Outreach Office and meets twice monthly. A central part of the Society's work is to meet with families in need, assess their situation and work to fill these needs. The Society attempts to help with their day to day needs-food, clothing, shelter and direction.
Friends of Mercy
Honoring Our Health Care Heroes
The Friends of Mercy was founded in 1935 as an organization of men originally dedicated to volunteering their time and efforts to raise funds for the construction of a new hospital building and advancement of medical and surgical care for the patients of Mercy Hospital, now known as Mercy Medical Center.
Although members of the Friends focus, first and foremost, on raising funds for the facilities, programs and services at Mercy, they also find friendship and recreational opportunities as an added dividend of membership.
The Friends raise funds for Mercy through the sponsorship of four annual benefits. Starting with the Gentlemen’s St. Patrick’s Dinner in March, onto the fun Luau held in June, to the Mercy Golf Outing in September and ending with a bang at the Mercy Ball, held on the first Saturday in December. The big highlight at the St. Patrick’s Dinner is when the Friends present the proceeds of their previous year’s fundraising activities to Mercy’s CAO. The Luau is a fun night of laughter and casual dress held at the Ocean Club in Atlantic Beach. The Golf Outing is always held on a pristine golf course and offers a great day for all who attend. Finally, the Mercy Ball is a prestigious event that has become the traditional kick-off for Long Island’s holiday social season.
For information about The Friends, please call the Development Office at: 516-705-2618 or visit our website: https://mercymedicalcenter.chsli.org/friends-mercy-medical-center-events
Senior Club
The Senior Club welcomes all people in the Rockville Centre community and surrounding areas who are 50 years of age or older. Members participate in both spiritual and social activities. The club sponsors outside speakers, outings and trips, luncheons, socials and a “lending library.” It also supports the Parish Outreach Center with food and clothing. The club’s meetings provide the opportunity to socialize with coffee and cake as well as learn. The club meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. New members are always welcome.
The Stewardship Committee
Stewardship acknowledges that God is the source of all our gifts and talents, and we are the caretakers of these gifts. Effective stewardship education and formation rely on leadership by example. Stewardship encourages us to make a difference and to become involved. It challenges individuals and families to re-examine their relationship with God, each other, the workplace, the community and the parish. It increases awareness and appreciation of the presence of the Lord in our lives. Where stewardship has been implemented, both givers’ and receivers’ lives have been changed. True conversion has taken place in the hearts and minds of many who embrace Stewardship as a way of life.
The promotion of the practice of stewardship is important for the mission of the Church and for the spiritual well-being of each individual Christian. “Everyone benefits from the sacrificial gift one makes of his time, talent and treasure" (Pope Benedict XVI). The Stewardship Committee facilitates and supports the growth of the Parish by responding with our Time, Talent and Treasure in response to God’s many gifts.

Worship and Liturgy
Altar Servers
This group of young men and women, from grades 6 through college, assist the Parish Community in its liturgical prayer. Being an altar server is an honor and a privilege which provides the opportunity to participate in the liturgy in a special way. Other goals of the Altar Server Program are to deepen the server's faith, helping the server to appreciate the Mass more deeply, and to inspire young men and women to consider a religious vocation. The altar servers also participate in an annual day of recollection.
Bishop's Servers
Bishop's Servers are high school or college students who expressed their desire to be involved with our parish ministries by serving episcopal liturgies at the Cathedral. Their ministry includes not only serving at the bishop’s Masses but also all major diocesan celebrations at St. Agnes. Volunteers for this ministry do not have to have previous experience of serving. Training is provided for assisting at various liturgies.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion fill a great need in helping to distribute Holy Communion at Mass on Sunday and weekdays. The ministry of extraordinary ministers is open to both religious and lay men and women over the age of eighteen. These men and women bring Communion to the sick and homebound offering spiritual nourishment and comfort during times of illness and infirmity. They also visit nursing homes, health-related facilities and hospitals within the parish providing a much needed service to those who cannot come to church. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion receive intensive diocesan training and are commissioned at St. Agnes Cathedral in a special ceremony.
Family Mass Committee
The Family Mass Committee works to create an inspiring atmosphere where children and families can participate at the Family Mass held on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the Cathedral and 10:30 a.m. in the Lower Hall. The committee offers all families the opportunity to participate by proclaiming the readings; leading the responsorial psalm; carrying the offertory gifts and preparing the altar. Families also serve as ministers of hospitality by distributing the liturgy programs and children’s bulletins before and after Mass.
This committee also supports the Cathedral’s annual Christmas Pageant, where the celebration of the birth of Jesus is reenacted. It involves our Children’s Choir as well as children ages 5 - 14 who bring to life the Christmas Story.
Lectors
Many men and women and youth of the parish proclaim the Word of God at Sunday and weekday liturgies. Lectors receive training at parish and diocesan workshops. In addition they participate in special recollection sessions to promote their spiritual growth and to maintain and improve the skills needed to properly proclaim the Word of God.
Special Needs Mass
St. Agnes Cathedral holds a monthly Mass especially for families with children who have developmental disabilities. Families with special needs children often find it difficult to attend weekly Mass together.
This Mass will give these families the opportunity to celebrate God's presence in their lives together. Children and adults with special needs will be filling as many liturgy positions as possible. All are invited to come and to be a part of this special liturgy.

Ministry of Hospitality
The Ministry of Hospitality welcomes parishioners and visitors who gather at St. Agnes and helps to make them feel that they are an integral part of our Eucharistic Celebration. Ushers and greeters set an example of hospitality for the rest of the assembly. Even beyond giving an example, the very act of welcoming someone often enables that person to be more hospitable to others as well. The gift of welcome that greeters and ushers give is passed on, like the ripples created by a stone tossed in a pond. The ushers and greeters are the initiators of a climate of hospitality that should spread throughout the assembly. The activities of the Ministry of Hospitality help to make real our parish mission statement where we “affirm the sanctity of each person.” In addition, their active and visible participation in the liturgy encourages other to do the same.
Greeters welcome people s they arrive and hand them a liturgy program to encourage active participation. At the end of Mass, they distribute the parish bulletin, so people are informed about parish activities. They may also assist the ushers in taking up the collection.
The Greeters have instituted monthly “Hospitality Sundays,” where people can gather after Mass in the Parish Center to enjoy coffee and cake while getting to know their fellow parishioners.
Ushers also welcome parishioners to the liturgy. In addition, they assist worshippers to find seats, organize the Offertory procession and take up the collections. Each month they take a count of those in attendance to assist in determining the correct number of hosts to be consecrated for each Mass. They are also available to provide assistance and attend to emergencies if they arise.
Ministry of Consolation
The loss of a loved one often requires grief stricken families to make decisions about unfamiliar details at a time when they are least able to do so. The Ministry of Consolation consists of St. Agnes volunteers who assist family members as they plan the funeral liturgy for their loved ones. These companions offer consolation and help the families select appropriate scripture readings and music and guide them through the Liturgy of the Mass of Christian Burial. They accompany the family to the church and are available to assist them during the Funeral Mass.
Prayer Groups
Prayer Ministry
Inspired by Bishop John R. McGann’s pastoral letter entitled, Comfort My People (1997), this ministry invites everyone to pray for community and individual needs. It especially welcomes those who are ill, homebound or otherwise unable to participate in other ministries. Members are simply asked to pray, in whatever way they wish, for the parish and for intentions submitted in writing and placed in the box located at the shrine of the American Saints in the Cathedral. These intentions are mailed to members each month along with some materials for their reflection. This program is coordinated by the Office of Social Ministry.
Charismatic Prayer Group
Meets in an informal worship session to praise and listen to God. Praise is expressed in a number of ways: songs, formal or spontaneous prayer, and silence. God speaks to those gathered through scripture, teaching, charismatic gifts and personal sharing.
Detective Steven McDonald Men's Prayer Group
This prayer group was started by late NYPD Detective Steven McDonald in his own home with a small group of men. A native of Rockville Centre and a lifelong parishioner Det. McDonald led the group until the time of his passing in 2017.
The group meets at 7:30 p.m. on the last Thursday of every month in the Parish Center. Each meeting starts with the saying of the rosary followed by a guest speaker. Each September members of the group participate in the annual Father Mychal Judge 9/11 Walk of Remembrance. A three mile walk, ending at St. Peter's Church IN the spot where the body of FDNY Chaplin Father Mychal Judge was placed after being pulled from the rubble when the Twin Towers collapsed on September 11th.
The Father Mychal Judge 9/11 Walk of Remembrance was started in 2003 by Det. McDonald, a close friend of Father Judge. If you are interested in joining the group contact Kevin Conlon at (718) 757-6908
Miraculous Medal Novena
The perpetual novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal is conducted after the 9:00 AM Mass each Monday and after the 7:30 PM Mass each Monday.
Nocturnal Adoration Society
The Nocturnal Adoration Society is an international prayer society established simply to give to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, what is rightfully His: the adoration of His Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist. Being in His Presence can confer a feeling of peace and tranquility and provides an opportunity to adore Jesus and draw closer to Him. For two hours on the First Friday of each month, from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar. During the first hour, formal prayers from the Office of the Blessed Sacrament are recited in community. The second hour is reserved for silent prayer and adoration. Additionally, each November, an evening Mass is celebrated in the Cathedral attended by parish societies from throughout the diocese.
Rosary Altar Society
This Society’s main purpose is to honor Mary through increased devotion to the rosary and to enrich the lives of our members through meetings and other activities. Some of the activities and events of the Society are a Day of Recollection, religious and secular programs at the monthly meetings, participation in Mary’s Day in May, and a St. Patrick’s luncheon. Members also have the opportunity to serve the parish through hosting the receptions that follow the Holy Thursday Chrism Mass and priesthood ordination, through visitation at nursing homes and by reciting the Rosary after the 9 a.m. Mass on weekdays. The Rosary Society is open to all women of the parish. Meetings are held on the third Monday of most months at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Center.
St. Monica Parents Intercession Prayer Group
The focus of the prayer will be for the guidance, safety, health and faith of our children. The prayer will consist of the Rosary and other prayers, some of which ask for the intercession of Saints Monica and Michael on behalf of their children. Parents, grandparents, godparents, siblings, aunts, uncles and friends are welcome to attend. The group meets on the first and third Thursday of each month, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Holy Cross Chapel which is located in the Parish Ministries Building.

Religious Education provides an opportunity for children to deepen their knowledge of the Catholic faith and prepare for First Penance, First Communion, and Confirmation. Classes take place on Sunday morning at 10:00 am in St. Agnes Cathedral School.
Two Youth Groups offer young people both a social outlet and a way to grow their faith. Younger Youth Group meets Sunday at 10:00 am in St. Agnes Cathedral School. The older Youth Group members serve as Lectors and Ushers for the 7:30 pm Mass in the Cathedral on the last Saturday of every month.
Adult Education provides an opportunity for expanding knowledge about our Faith. Adult education takes place every Saturday after the 7:30 pm Mass in the Quealy Room.
Cursillo Movement - The Cursillistas are a group that have received theological formation and work to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. The Cursillistas gather for an Ultreya meeting on Saturday evening after the 7:30 pm Mass in the Quealy Room.

Our Charitable Organizations
The Honor Network
The Honor Network encourages you to Be The Good in your neighborhood and community. Doing random, positive acts can change a person’s day for the better. Something as simple as a smile and hello or buying a cup of coffee for the person behind you in line can make all the difference. We want YOU to Be The Good and spread kindness.
Rockville Centre Breast Cancer Coalition
The Rockville Center Breast Cancer Coalition is a nonprofit 501(c)3 grassroots organization founded in 2017. The mission of the Rockville Centre Breast Cancer Coalition is to provide support services and education to those in our community who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. We are dedicated to providing educational materials and programs to help individuals make informed decisions regarding treatment and their physical and emotional health. We have established a student scholarship fund benefitting a student in the community. The RVCBCC supports breast cancer research and the continued search for prevention and a cure.
RVC Youth Council
In collaboration with the Rockville Centre Coalition for Youth, the school district, the police department, and the Ryan Patrick O'Shea Foundation, we have been creating billboards addressing drug use and abuse, mental health awareness, and suicide prevention. Our last Billboard was about suicide prevention.
RVC St. Baldrick’s
Fundraising to Find Cures and Treatments for Childhood Cancer
The annual Rockville Centre St. Baldrick’s Event at the Parish Center fundraises for The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which funds childhood cancer research to find cures and better treatments for all pediatric cancers. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, founded by RVC resident, John Bender, in 1999, is now the largest funder of childhood cancer research, second only to the US government, in providing grants for research, clinical trials and treatments for childhood cancers.
There has been a St. Baldrick’s signature head-shaving/ponytail-chopping fundraiser in Rockville Centre every year since 2004. To date, the RVC events have raised over four million dollars with the 2019 RVC event raising over $530,000 and the 2020 RVC virtual event (due to Covid-19), raising over $300,000. Since becoming a foundation in 2005, St. Baldrick’s has become the largest funder of childhood cancer research in the world other than the U.S. Government, granting over 290 million dollars for childhood cancer research.
Every two minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer. One in 5 children in the U.S. will not survive, as well as 99% of survivors developing some kind of chronic health condition from the cancer treatments they received. St. Baldrick’s works tirelessly to fund the most promising research around the world to find cures and improve treatments for all childhood cancers. The Parish Center St. Baldrick’s event is an annual community, family-friendly, action-packed day filled with head-shaving, ponytail chopping, inspirational speakers, child honorees, live music, food, drinks, raffles, children’s activities, merchandise, along with a bake sale which specifically benefits a different RVC family each year affected by childhood cancer. Local students, teachers, parents and businesses donate their time, talents, goods and services while participants and supporters all help make the Parish Center St Baldrick’s event an uplifting, successful event each year. A modified, safe RVC St. Baldrick’s Event is being planned for March 20, 2021.
