Soil temperature plays an important role in many processes which take place in the soil such as chemical reactions and biological interactions. Germination and plant growth are affected by soil temperature.
To measure the soil temperature at Longneck Lagoon EEC, you will use a soil thermometer. You will also need the small tent peg and trowel so you can make a hole in the ground.
Use the back of the trowel to hammer the metal tent peg in to the ground about 4cm and then remove the peg.
Turn the soil thermometer on, remove the cover from the thermometer and place the thermometer into the hole.
Wait 1 minute before removing the thermometer from the ground and reading the temperature in degrees Celsius.
Turn the thermometer “off”, replace the cover and return all equipment to the black case.
