Testing pH is an indicator of how acid or alkaline the water is. pH values below 5 and above 9 could be regarded as polluted. Values between 6.7 and 8.6 can support healthy fish populations.
To measure the pH of the water at Longneck Lagoon EEC you will use the pH testing kit from the grey case. It contains a small test tube, pH paper and a colour chart. You will also need the water sample bottle.
You will need a sample of the water. Use the sample bottle to collect this.
Tear off a piece of pH testing paper that is slightly longer than the test tube. Place the paper in the test tube and fill the test tube with water from the sample bottle.
Replace the lid and wait for the pH paper to change colour. Place the test tube over the black line in the centre of the colour chart in the testing kit and match the colour of the paper through the water with the pH colour chart.
Dispose of the chemical waste in the chemical waste container and wash your test tube in the wash up bucket.
Replace all equipment in your grey kit.
