In a terrestrial ecosystem leaf litter provides nutrients to the ecosystem, helps retain moisture, provides homes for terrestrial animals and promotes bushfires for regeneration.
To measure leaf litter density at Longneck Lagoon EEC you will need a set of 1m x 1m quadrat poles and a coloured button marker from your kit.
To determine your test site, stand at the side of the path and gently throw the coloured button over your shoulder. The location of your button will mark the first corner of your quadrat.
Extend the quadrat set until it is at full length (2 poles and 2 ropes pull out to make a square) and place on the ground with one corner over the top of the button.
Estimate the % of the quadrat that is covered in leaf litter. Leaf litter includes bark, leaves and twigs - bare patches and grasses are not included.
Pack up your equipment by aligning the 2 poles, wrap the cord around the end of the poles and use the elastic to secure it in place. Return the button to the black case.
