The canopy level of a forest or woodland serves multiple purposes.
It is an important habitat zone, provides protection from storm events, controls available light to lower storeys and dictates the local microclimatic conditions such as temperature and humidity.
To measure the density of the canopy at Longneck Lagoon EEC, you will be using a canopy density board which has a mirror and a graduated results scale called a Sprecht chart.
Remove the board from its protective cloth bag.
Hold the canopy density board at waist height and parallel to the ground with the mirror facing up.
Look into the mirror and compare the view with the Sprecht chart on your clipboard below the mirror and select the closest image to reflect the canopy density.
Replace the canopy density board back in the bag and put the bag in the black case.
