Moisture in the air or humidity is available for plants. Dense plant communities (such as the casuarina forest) retain air moisture by inhibiting air movement and evaporation.
To measure the air moisture at Longneck Lagoon EEC, you will need to use the wet and dry bulb thermometer which is called a hygrometer. You will find this hanging in a tree at your testing site.
There are two thermometers on a hygrometer. One is exposed to the dry air and the second has a ‘wick’ over the bulb which is immersed in the water reservoir below.
Read the temperature of the dry bulb and remember that number.
Read the temperature of the wet bulb.
Subtract the wet bulb temperature from the dry bulb temperature.
Your answer can then be used to calculate air moisture or % humidity by locating the temperature difference on the column head in the middle table.
Track down the corresponding column until level with the dry bulb temperature.
