Zonar is a commercial fleet and transportation tracking & analytics platform specializing in driver and vehicle safety compliance, as well as safe student transport and tracking.
Ground Traffic Control a.ka. GTC, is Zonar’s base offering. It grew organically with sales which meant the product was full of custom code, used multiple styles sheets when it used any, maintained several code libraries and versions, and had little used features. All of this meant it was very time consuming to make changes to the product. A complete rewrite of the product had been under way for over four years with very little meaningful progress.
THE BREAKDOWN
With over 132 separate reports, four different code libraries and functionality and interactions specific to almost every report, there was no quick fix.
I began multiple work efforts with my team simultaneously; our researcher performed a content audit of all the functionality across reports, our senior UI designer got to work creating style guides based on material design and angular, and I focused on our most used reports to figure out how we could improve the experience, thereby improving the experience for the majority of our users overall.
Seven months later, we launched the beta to long-term existing customers. After two months and extensive use from our beta users, 23 out of 24 said they strongly preferred the new UI and the product changes.
