The Mat Project is a recycling service project that is controlled by ECO-Raiders, which is a club at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. This project involves using old plastic grocery bags to make a sleeping mat for the homeless. It was started during the 2020-2021 school year and had first gotten the help of the Science National Honors Society to get the project off the ground. The project had later gotten whole school-wide involvement. At the conclusion of the project, we had gotten 80 student mats turned in, which had created 40 full-sized mats for the homeless. Each full-sized mat had used around 400 plastic grocery bags, which means that this project had recycled around 24,000 plastic grocery bags in total. This project is done in collaboration with the service organization Showering Love. Showering Love is a 501c3 Non-profit that provides mobile showers, new undergarments, socks, and hygiene travel kits, and other supportive services for people who are housing insecure through their mobile bus. Participating in this project is a great way to recycle and lend a hand to people in need.
