Student Talks on Trending Topics in Theory is an interactive discussion meeting focused on theoretical physics, organized by and for advanced graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from India. Now marking its 10th edition, the workshop continues to follow the spirit of the Modave Summer School in Belgium by prioritizing peer-to-peer dialogue over formal lectures.
The workshop will feature participant-delivered research talks and interactive discussions covering topics in string theory, quantum field theory, general relativity, and theoretical condensed matter physics. Emphasis will be placed on informal discussions, idea exchange, and building a collaborative early-career research community.
The program is primarily designed for senior graduate students and early-career postdoctoral fellows, though younger participants and more senior researchers are also considered based on logistical capacity. The central goal is to maintain an informal yet rigorous environment for exchanging ideas on the most current developments in the field.
To bring together graduate students and postdocs working in India into a vibrant community by stimulating academic interaction with each other.
To provide enough exposure to various new research topics, culminating in thriving research ventures.
To open communication channels between students and postdocs who work in string theory and other field theoretic areas.
To facilitate and encourage student collaborations.
To enhance the teaching and speaking experience of students.
To foster an environment where students can get helpful feedback about their ideas about Physics (and sometimes regarding other social issues) in a low-pressure setting.
To strengthen the community of students and postdocs in theoretical high-energy physics.
Specially helpful for students from institutes with smaller research groups, fewer resources, and fewer people to discuss physics. Selection of applicants from such places will be prioritized.
Oftentimes, it happens that two theoretical high-energy students working on different things are not able to understand or appreciate each other's work. In the times of hyper-specialization, it is difficult for young researchers to have a broader perspective. We would not wish to spend precious time learning some things not immediately needed for our own research. However, it is our duty as a community to look outside our own pockets of research areas. ST4 is an ideal place for this; we have very pedagogical lectures and tutorials. In the absence of any faculties, one is not hindered by the feeling of being judged. ST4 is a perfect workshop to fill the holes in our understanding of basic concepts, learn new subjects, polish up our niche areas of research, and find new potential collaborators.
The workshop took place from 22 June to 4 July 2026 at the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI).
