Journey Through India's Cultural Diversity: The Heritage Exhibition
The commemoration of World Heritage Day on April 18, 2024, hosted by Salwan Public School, Gurugram, commenced with the inauguration of the Heritage Exhibition through a traditional lamp lighting ceremony. The invited guests, students, and staff gathered to witness the unveiling of a diverse array of exhibits showcasing India's rich cultural heritage. The Heritage Day exhibition provided glimpses of India's rich heritage and culture through various traditional Indian art forms. The event drew participants from all Clubs of Upnidhi, transforming the school's campus into a vibrant hub of culture, history, and creativity.

The display presented by the Heritage Club members of Salwan Public School, Gurugram, featured various traditional Indian art forms, each with its unique history and aesthetic. Vibrant Madhubani paintings, intricate Kalamkari art, Pichwai, Gond, and Warli Art added to the artistic variety, with their unique motifs and storytelling elements. The display also included examples of Pattachitra and Aipan art, offering insights into the diverse folk traditions from different regions of India. The replicas of Indus Valley seals and pottery provided a glimpse into ancient Indian history. Phad scrolls and Kalighat panels, traditional forms of storytelling through art, added a narrative dimension to the exhibition, with their detailed stories and character illustrations. The exhibits also included a special segment on Mandala art, known for its intricate circular designs. Traditional textiles and embroidery patterns created by students depicted the intricate craftsmanship of traditional Indian weavers. The sketches of famous Indian monuments and traditional Jharokhas brought an architectural aspect to the event, highlighting the rich history of Indian architecture. The "Education through Monuments" project was a unique aspect of the exhibition. Students presented detailed models, flip books, illustrations, and models of iconic monuments of Haryana, emphasizing the importance of preserving these sites for future generations.

The event showcased a diverse range of artworks created by students, demonstrating a keen interest in cultural history and craftsmanship. The exhibit featured striking examples of prehistoric art, with vibrant designs and symbolic motifs on paper mache slabs, a craft involving creating sculptures and models using paper and glue, showcasing the creativity and innovation of the students. The intricate Madhubani paintings added a touch of traditional elegance, while the Warli art captivated visitors with its simple yet expressive forms. A section dedicated to pen-and-ink work on Indian monuments offered a detailed look at architectural heritage, with students illustrating iconic structures with precision and creativity. A standout element of the display was the collection of sculptures inspired by the Indus Valley Civilization. These artefacts provided a glimpse into one of India's earliest cultures, underscoring the timeless nature of Indian heritage.

Salwan Youth Heritage Club, Rajender Nagar also created an impressive display of handmade artefacts, highlighting India's rich cultural heritage. Their presentation showcased a diverse collection of traditional Indian art forms, captivating attendees with its depth and variety. The exhibits included beautifully crafted manuscript paintings demonstrating the intricate artistry of traditional Indian storytelling. A selection of vibrant masks showcased the creativity and skill involved in mask-making, adding a touch of theatrical flair. One of their display's most exciting sections was dedicated to a variety of traditional art forms, from vibrant Madhubani and Warli art to intricate Kalamkari and Pichwai designs. Each panel highlighted the unique cultural significance and craftsmanship of these art forms, offering a vivid glimpse into India's rich artistic heritage. Their bold colours and unique designs brought life and energy to the event. The model of Humayun's Tomb stood as a stunning representation of Mughal architecture, meticulously crafted with detailed domes and arches. Its intricate design and faithful reproduction highlighted the students' skill and appreciation for India's historical landmarks. This comprehensive display gave students and visitors an immersive experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for India's diverse cultural heritage.

Among the highlights were models of the Qutub Minar and Sun Temple, each meticulously constructed to reflect their architectural significance and historical context. Students provided insightful explanations on the heritage importance of these iconic structures, enriching the experience for attendees. The exhibition also featured a stunning array of traditional Indian art forms like Madhubani paintings and Kalamkari art displaying the vibrant use of colors and intricate patterns that characterize these styles. Pichwai art, known for its depictions of Lord Krishna, added a spiritual and cultural dimension to the event. Paper Mache plates adorned with Kalighat paintings brought a folk-art aesthetic to the display. Adding a unique touch, a chart of heritage cuisines offered a culinary perspective on India's diverse traditions. It was an engaging celebration of cultural legacy, demonstrating the students' creativity and deep appreciation for India's heritage.

Visit of Heritage Exhibition by the Guests
Following the inauguration of the Heritage Exhibition, students from Salwan Public School, Gurugram, took the stage at the Exhibition arena to present a mesmerizing classical Raaga performance, marking Heritage Day with a celebration of India's musical heritage. This instrumental programme, featuring the Tabla and Sitar, showcased the talents of 18 participants, with 8 on Sitar and 10 on Tabla. The performance began with a rendition of Raag Bhopali on the Sitar, skillfully executed by students of Salwan Public School. The composition, based on Teental, included soulful Aalaap, intricate Bandish, and captivating Jhala, engrossing the audience with its melodic intricacies and emotive depth. Complementing the Sitar, the Tabla ensemble added rhythmic complexity and depth to the performance. In Vilambit laya, students showcased their mastery with Uthaan, demonstrating different layakari and culminating in a Tihai. The performance concluded with a dynamic rendition of Drutt laya Teentaal, featuring energetic Jhala and ending with a fast-paced Tihai, leaving the audience spellbound by their precision and skill. The guests of the event deeply appreciated the musical talent showcased by the young musicians. They commended the school for organizing such enriching programmes and encouraged the students to continue their journey in learning Indian classical music, recognizing its importance in preserving and promoting India's cultural heritage.

Raag Yaman, nestled in the parent scale Kalyan Thaat, embodies a rich assortment of melodies, known for its meditative qualities that induce feelings of longing and devotion in the listener and performer alike. Its musical structure allows for endless opportunities for improvisation, enabling musicians to express their creativity while honouring its timeless presence on the musical landscape.

Adding a touch of divine grace to the Heritage Day celebration, Salwan Public School, TDSC, presented an enchanting invocation dance that mesmerized the audience with its beauty and cultural richness. Through graceful movements and precise choreography, the students invoked the spiritual essence while depicting glimpses of India's cultural heritage through the Chhau Dance form. The performance was a captivating blend of spirituality and artistic expression, with each movement carefully crafted to convey reverence and grace. Adding to the ambiance of reverence and celebrations, the Principal of Salwan Public School, Gurugram, Ms. Rashmi Malik, delivered an inspiring address, marking the commencement of the World Heritage Day festivities.
With eloquence and passion, Ms. Malik illuminated the significance of the occasion, tracing back to the inception of Salwan Education Trust's pivotal role in commemorating World Heritage Day since 2019. She highlighted the Trust's visionary stance in establishing an educational platform aimed at nurturing students' appreciation for our cultural legacy and instil in them a profound sense of responsibility towards its preservation for posterity. Echoing the sentiments espoused by the Trust's Chairman, Ms. Malik reiterated the poignant belief that "Without nurturing our roots, our ability to soar is compromised," encapsulating the essence of the day's celebration. She emphasized the indispensable connection between understanding and cherishing one's heritage and the capacity for growth and advancement.
Moreover, Ms. Malik galvanized the Salwanian community by proclaiming every member as an integral component of the Heritage Club's youth force. A pivotal component of the programme was ‘the curtain raiser episode’ of SPS Dialogues on the theme of 'Hamara Itihas Hamara Prayas' through an insightful conversation amongst the student members of Upnidhi with the experts in the field, Mr Madan Sawhney and Ms Lehar Zaidi. Mr Madan Sawhney is a retired lecturer of Political Science and currently serves as a freelance educational motivator and Master Trainer for CBSE, and Ms. Lehar Zaidi is an Epidemiologist, freelance journalist, and founder of the heritage cultural group ‘Sanjhi Virasat’. The interactive session with the student representatives of Upnidhi provided profound insights into the imperative of safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage among the youth. They apprised the audience of the programmes and initiatives they are involved in with the mission of preserving our heritage. They voiced concern over the oversight of historical marvels such as Kashmiri Gate, Sultan Garhi, and Bauli. Mr Sawhney took a trip down to memory lane while sharing a few anecdotes of his acquaintances with local people in old Gurugram, and mentioned many places of grave historical relevance.

The day also witnessed glimpses of rich Indian heritage through a purposeful presentation by the students of Salwan Public School, Gurugram included the amalgamation of rendition of Shabad, Sufi dance, Kathak dance, and a Nukkad Natak with the message of communal harmony. The presentation was the learning gained by the students, as an activity under Upnidhi, who visited the heritage sites of Farrukhnagar including Sheesh Mahal, Sethani ki Chatri, and Seeta Ram Mandir. The students shared during the prelude, an amazing fact about the Sita Ram Mandir that it has a temple, a gurudwara, and a mosque under a single unified structure. This unity among differences was beautifully depicted through the cultural presentation and a video of the visit.

The academic year 2023-2024 at Salwan Public School Gurugram was characterized by vibrant celebrations of India's rich cultural heritage that was elucidated by the members of the Club. Students had the privilege of attending workshops conducted by Padmashri recipients, learning from master artists, and gaining insights into traditional art forms and techniques. As a part of one of the activities of the club, Upnidhi has given students the privilege to explore various historical monuments and heritage sites. Educational visits to Farrukkhnagar and the iconic Red Fort enriched students' understanding of local heritage and Mughal architecture, respectively. During their visit to Farrukhnagar, the local treasures of Haryana which have recently been added as a heritage site, they realized that such unexplored sites and monuments require urgent attention for their preservation. Set against the backdrop of history, these sites, including Sethani ki Chatri, Baoli Ghus Ali Shah, Sheesh Mahal, and Sita Ram Mandir, showcased not just architectural brilliance but also the rich collection of stories that define our cultural heritage. This visit provided all students with a memorable opportunity to know, understand, and appreciate the forgotten history and culture of Farrukhnagar.
Furthermore, students were engaged in diverse art forms such as Madhubani, Gond, Kalamkari, and Kalighat, expanding their artistic horizons and appreciating the beauty of India's cultural diversity. Hands-on weaving and stitching pottery sessions honed students' creative skills and connected them with traditional craft techniques. As part of a water conservation initiative, students participated in the Phad Se Padh project, raising awareness about the importance of water conservation through artistic expression. Salwan Youth Heritage Club, Gurugram also actively participated in the Gurgaon History Festival, collaborating with other educational institutions to promote cultural heritage and historical awareness among students.
