ST. NICHOLAS SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH SCHOOL

HISTORY

The Church School of St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church, Indianapolis, IN was founded in 1950. The first teachers and organizers of the school were +Dorothy Milivojac, Yovanka Savich, and +Steve Yerich. +Dorothy, Yovanka, and +Steve all held degrees in education and taught for the Indianapolis Public Schools for decades. +Dorothy taught elementary school and Yovanka and +Steve both taught high school. Under their leadership and efforts, regular Sunday Church School classes were establish. Annually the Church School observes the feast day of St. Sava with a special program honoring the patron saint of the schools and children.

ACTIVITIES

Church School classes are held each Sunday, after Holy Communion, from the second Sunday in September through the month of May. We break for the winter for a couple of weeks and resume mid-January with preparations for our annual St. Sava Celebration. Throughout the year our children enjoy special events including a fall festival. Through our Church School, our children grow in greater knowledge and understanding of our Orthodox Christian faith and Serbian Heritage, learning to become future leaders of our Holy Orthodox Church. The school staff is directed by our parish priest. Parents are involved in many extra-curricular activities during the year. We all work together to lead our children along the path of knowledge and Christian fellowship and love. 

Our church school offers the following:

• Video messages on the upcoming lectures and contemporary issues. YouTube Channel - Lessons now available.

• Q & A - every church school room has a box in which a student can bring in, or a teacher can write out and place any question, for our priest to answer.

•  Set curriculum.

•  Discussion on the Gospel and the Epistle reading for each Sunday.

•  Learning about Church feast days and holidays.

•  Children's choir

•  Church related arts and crafts.

•  Fellowship

•  Life lessons

Church school starts on Sunday with the Divine liturgy at 10 AM in church - following communion children go to church school area for chanting and lessons.
