The Work at Height Regulations - a required checklist for when using ladders
Any employee only uses a ladder where a risk assessment shows that this is appropriate
Surfaces supporting the ladder are safe (i.e. stable, firm etc.)
The ladder is stable
The ladder is prevented from slipping
The ladder extends sufficiently above any landing place, unless there is provision for an adequate hand-hold
The sections of the interlocking or extension ladder are prevented from moving relative to each other while in use
The ladder is prevented from moving before being stepped on
The ladder is used in such a way as to ensure they provide a secure handhold/support at all times for users and that a safe handhold can be maintained when carrying a load.

In order to prevent slips and trips, the following precautions are advised:
· using handrails where provided;
· dealing quickly with spills;
· ensuring that effective cleaning procedures are in place;
· ensuring that access to and from the building is safe when surfaces are icy, wet or snowy;
· preventing water, mud and leaves from coming into the building when the doors are open;
· providing adequate lighting;
· reporting and sorting defects quickly;
We work to prevent such hazards arising in the first place planning in advance, having a system of checks and inspections in place to monitor the premises is essential, and training where necessary. Particular attention is given to access routes.

"Those who work or volunteer for the church are often required to complete various tasks on their own. This could be in the church itself and the surrounding churchyard, or while visiting others. Working alone can present a number of additional hazards; for example, using access equipment (such as a portable ladder) or lifting heavy objects could be too much for one person on their own. Here, it is important to check that the tasks can be done safely.
Another important consideration for churches is the risk of violence and/or aggression where people are completing tasks on their own. While incidents of assault are thankfully rare, physical or verbal attacks can have serious and traumatic effects for those involved where they do occur. "
