What Is Lutheran Dartball?
Dartball is a game that mimics baseball, but instead of swinging bats, players throw darts at a large board shaped like a baseball diamond. Each section of the board represents different outcomes: strikes, balls, outs, singles, doubles, triples, home runs, and more. The goal is to score runs just like in baseball, with teams competing in nine-inning games.
A Legacy of Fellowship
Lutheran dartball leagues began in the early 20th century, especially flourishing during the Great Depression as a low cost way for congregations to gather and enjoy friendly competition. Lutheran ministers were instrumental in spreading the game, often bringing dartboards along with their Bibles as they moved between congregations.
The game became a staple in many Lutheran communities, with leagues forming across the Midwest and beyond. Some leagues have been active for over 80 years.
How It Works
· Teams: Usually consist of 7–9 players from local Lutheran churches.
· Season: Typically runs from September to April, with weekly matches.
· Gameplay: Players throw darts underhanded from 20 feet away. Each dart is like a pitch in baseball.
· Structure: Matches often include three nine-inning games. Some leagues require winning two out of three to claim victory for the night.
· Equipment: Boards are 4x4 feet, and darts are specialized. They are often wooden with real feathers and metal tips
