Basic Spanish skills (4 semester hours)
Department of Languages, Literature, and Cultures at Illinois State University
This class is a four-credit-hour class taught through the Contraseña online platform and Canvas. According to ISU, for each credit hour, students are expected to spend THREE hours working on assignments AT HOME on top of the class meeting time. Please, note that besides attending class meetings, you will be required to complete online assignments regularly. In order to meet the course objectives, the student is required to do pre- and post-class preparation, to attend class regularly, and to participate fully in class activities.
You chose to study Spanish, which means you want to be able to converse with someone in Spanish. Therefore, emphasis in this course will be in development of oral skills. Spanish will be the language of instruction and students are expected to use Spanish in class. We know you do not know much Spanish, but we simply ask that you make an effort to use Spanish when talking to your teacher and your peers. Your instructor will always provide you with the resources you need so you can complete all in-class activities in Spanish. The more you practice your oral skills, the closer you will be able to speak Spanish proficiently and the easier it will be to complete oral assignments for this course
Designed for students with no prior Spanish study; an introduction to Spanish language and culture.
Spanish 111 is the first of the two introductory courses for beginning students of Spanish. The purpose of this sequence is to help students develop proficiency in the four language skills essential to effective communicative language learning, and to offer an introduction to the culture of the ample Hispanic world. By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Introduce yourself, greet others, spell names, express dates and tell time.
Briefly talk about your studies, academic life, daily routines
Ask and answer basic personal questions
Briefly describe people, places and things, household activities
State plans for daily activities, express obligations,
Mention family members and their personal characteristics
Overall, you will be able to convey basic personal meaning and engage in very simple Spanish conversations about personal topics and/or daily occurrences.
If you have taken Spanish before and you think this course may be too easy for you, you may want to change to SPA 112. This change needs to take place within the first TEN DAYS of classes (by Wednesday of the second week) in order to avoid being penalized for late homework in your new course in SPA 112. Before you make a decision to switch levels, we recommend the following:
Look through all assignments in Contraseña for chapters 1-6 so you can get an idea about the expected level of Spanish for SPA 111.
You may want to consider sitting on a SPA 112 class the first week of classes to see whether that level would be better for you. Don't stop coming to your SPA 111 classes, but contact the teacher for the SPA 112 class that may fit your schedule and ask him/her to visit your class a couple of times.
Look through chapters 7-13 in Contrsaseña since these are the chapters covered in SPA 112. That will give you an idea about the expected level for SPA 112.
Take the free Online Placement Exam. Based on the score you get, you will be recommended to register for a specific Spanish class. If you have any questions about this exam or your score, please, contact montserratmir@ilstu.edu
IF YOU DECIDE TO CHANGE levels, do so ASAP. You need to make sure that the class you want to change to has any available seats. If it does not, contact the instructor and ask for an override. However, please, understand that instructors have the right to accept or deny overrides. Remember, the last day to change levels is Wednesday of the second week of classes. This is important to avoid missing too many scored assignments.
Finally, if you are considering switching levels, please, continue doing all the assigned homework in SPA 111 until you officially switch levels just in case, there are no available seats and/or you are not granted an override.
